Saturday Sampler: Buck-a-Block Series 2013-14 Our new Buck-a-Block program is the next Saturday Sampler program. We will be running this for six months, November 2013 to April 2014. Each month you will receive TWO patterns for piecing the 8-inch finished blocks, using Thangles, and ONE pattern for an appliqué block. In addition, fabric kits will available in three colorways - Kansas Troubles, Black-n-White, and Brights. Each month, you can choose from different fabric selections in each of the colorways. You can purchase kits from any or all of the colorways for $1 per kit. You decide how many fabric kits and in which colorways you want to get each month, all for $1 each. If you bring back one completed block, you can purchase blocks the next month for $1 each again. Sign up and each month we’ll check your name off when you receive the block. The $1 fabric kits and free patterns will be available from 8:30-10 a.m. on the first Saturday morning November 2013-April 2014. If you cannot be at the regular monthly meeting, you can catch up by purchasing the patterns and one kit for $5. Additional fabric kits (without the pattern) will be available for $2 each any other time of the month, including after 10 a.m. on the first Saturday. Someone can pick up your blocks and patterns any other time of the month as well. We will provide settings for a 12-block quilt as well as a 35-block quilt, both set on point with sashing. (See two examples.) In the 12-block setting, there is room for six solid blocks, perfect for the appliqué patterns. You can do these using machine or hand appliqué or even embroidery. You can also use solid fabric or more pieced blocks. Questions? What size quilt will this make? This sample 12-block quilt is 53 by 67 inches. But you can make your quilts any size you want such as the larger 35-block example shown in the second image at the right. Finishing my quilt? You decide how to finish your quilt. In early 2014, we will have finishing kits available (at an additional charge) to finish your quilt. As we get near the end, the same finishing fabrics might not be available. But we will have other fabric options for you. What if I have questions or problems? You can bring questions to the Saturday meetings. Or stop by the shop and we will always try to help.
Using Thangles Thangles are a paper product designed to use fabric strips to make triangles, rather than cutting them individually. Each Thangles package comes with instructions. Each month, the pattern will feature tips. One package of 2-inch Thangles is enough to do 12 blocks. (A Thangles package is $5.) More at www.thangles.com.
