Of the 5,975 employed residents who do not work from home, 73.7 per cent (4,405) drive to work in cars or vans, with a further 4.7 per cent (283) travelling as passengers in cars or vans. Walking is the second most common mode of getting to work for Buckingham’s residents, at 13.0 per cent (774). Buckingham’s residents are more likely to travel by car than those of the county overall and much less likely to use buses or trains, which account for 10.1 per cent of commutes across Buckinghamshire but only 5.7 per cent in Buckingham. After Aylesbury Vale, Milton Keynes is the most common place of work by local authority for Buckingham residents. While 1,120 Buckingham residents leave the town for Milton Keynes, 730 Milton Keynes residents are making the opposite journey to work in Buckingham. The next most common places of work are the neighbouring districts of Cherwell and South Northamptonshire, followed by Oxford, Central Bedfordshire and Wycombe. Among those working in Buckingham, 33.7 per cent hold degree level qualifications well below the 39.3 per cent recorded among employed residents, showing that Buckingham loses highly qualified residents to work outside the town. This is reflected by the town providing a lower share of professional jobs than the county overall in all industries except the public sector as shown in table 2 and by the over-representation of jobs in elementary occupations. While four districts provide more than 90 per cent of Buckingham’s workers, the top ten districts for out-commuters make up only 82.7 per cent of the total. There were 6,423 people employed in Buckingham in 2001, so while the town’s population rose 2.7 per cent from 14,694 to 15,092, the number of people working in the town fell 0.8 per cent. 1 Data has been released to mid-level super output area, so Buckingham in this report refers to the wards of Buckingham North and Buckingham South as well as Luffield Abbey.
