Sean & Sonia’s Story Sean started at Hedleys Northern Counties School one year ago. Since starting the school, Sean has come on quite a lot. He is a lot more alert and his head control is better, he can now lift his head slightly and hold it there for up to 10 seconds a few times a week. This is a massive achievement for Sean and it is all down to the fantastic work that his oneto-one teachers put in. Sean also has hydrotherapy twice a week, which helps his muscle tone, physiotherapy every day, rebound therapy on the trampoline and a lot of sensory input throughout the week. We cannot thank Sean’s school and The Percy Hedley Foundation enough and doing the Great North Run is our way of saying thank you.
Sonia is mum to Sean, 7, who joined Hedleys Northern Counties School a year ago. Since joining the school, Sean, who is deaf, blind and has severe cerebral palsy, has made huge progress thanks to the work of his teachers and therapists.
Please help donate to this fantastic charity. Children like Sean don’t want mobile phones or the latest gadgets, they are happy with the smallest of things. All donations are very much appreciated, £5 can buy paint for the children who like to paint and get messy, £10 can buy a giant calculator for the older students who like maths, £20 will fund day trips out and £50 would help people who have had a stroke gain independence again, so every penny does help.
Here is Sonia’s story, in her own words... “I am setting myself a big challenge on behalf of my amazing son, Sean Gallagher, to help raise money for The Percy Hedley Foundation. I am going to do the Great North Run, which is 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields. Sean is a special little boy who needs 24-hour care. He has severe cerebral palsy. Sean is deaf, blind, cannot walk, talk, sit up or hold his own head up. He is tube fed and has severe epilepsy, and also has a life expectancy of his teens.
What is the Building Brighter Futures Appeal? We believe that everyone we support here at The Percy Hedley Foundation has a brighter future because of the work we do each day across all of our services. To enable us to continually evolve and develop we need to expand and replace our existing sites to offer facilities that meet the complex needs of our service users. We have put together a bold and very ambitious capital build plan that will ensure we can continue to offer vital services fit for the future for disabled people of any age for many years to come.

What we have achieved
What we are planning
The Percy Hedley Foundation has been at the forefront of high quality, personalised services for disabled people since 1953 when it was founded by a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy.
Following the successful completion of phase 1, we are now pressing ahead with our phase 2 plans, which mark the beginning of our Building Brighter Futures Appeal. Our phase 2 plans include;
Back then we had one building and now we operate across nine sites in the North East of England. Thanks to the support of donors and supporters, we recently opened two new facilities which will help many disabled children and adults to lead better lives. The Percy Hedley Hydrotherapy Pool and Bradbury View Children’s Residential Unit are state of the art, modern, fit for purpose, customised designs. But we can’t stop there. Building Brighter Futures is about creating the right environment for disabled people to maximise their independence, make choices, enjoy living and learning and reaching their potential.
A single site Campus for Hedleys Percy Hedley School Pupils attending the nationally significant Hedleys Percy Hedley School are currently accommodated on two sites. The vision is to move the children into one high quality facility on our current Killingworth site. Up to 200 disabled children would then be able to access onsite fit for purpose teaching and therapy provision, hydrotherapy, residential and sports facilities.
The redevelopment of Hedleys Leybourne We are establishing an 8-bed residential home for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. This specially adapted facility will enable the young to have access to the comprehensive care facilities they need in order to be able to live safely, access their local community and live life to the full.

PMLD Centre Social Enterprise
Phase 2 and Hedleys Leybourne are just the start of our Building Brighter Futures Appeal, as we have ambitious plans to improve and expand some of our other services.
What we are planning Single site Hedleys College In order to accommodate growing numbers of college students temporary space was created on our Station Road site in 2015/16. This is a good solution in the short term but it is our longer term goal to have a single site college campus. This would enable up to 120 young people to engage in appropriate educational activities in preparation for their transition into adult life.
Adult Social Enterprise & PMLD Centre We seek to develop an Enterprise Centre and employability opportunities including social enterprise, apprenticeships, move on programmes, learning and training programmes and volunteering opportunities to hundreds of disabled adults. Also, adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) deserve excellent facilities within which to undertake meaningful and life enhancing activities. We aim to provide a Centre of Excellence, complete with accessible therapy facilities.

As an individual This could be as simple as getting sponsored to do an activity, taking part in one of our events, placing one of our collecting tins, hosting your own event with your friends or family, asking your employer if they can support or even joining our Lottery. The Percy Hedley Foundation in numbers
I started at Percy Hedley School when I was six years old and now live independently, with support from The Percy Hedley Foundation, in my own bungalow.

Over 1 million hours of care and education every year
A while ago I decided to do a cross-fit challenge to raise funds for our Splash Appeal for a much needed hydrotherapy pool and since then I’ve organised various fundraising nights and even done a zipwire from the top of the Baltic Mill.

More than 1,000 supported families every year
•
Over 200 disabled adults enabled every day
I’ve been in a wheelchair most of my life so they were all major challenges for me, but they were nothing compared to the challenges faced by many disabled children, young people and adults every day.

Over 5,000 disabled children educated since we started
•
Over 600 disabled students placed within companies to gain valuable work experience in the last five years
•
64 years of history
•
Over 950 dedicated staff
Most recently I completed a sponsored silence and already have a number of ideas up my sleeve to raise vital funds for the new appeal. I dedicate time to fundraising because I believe in the organisation and it’s nice to be involved in creating a legacy for people who will come to Percy Hedley in the future. I may have always been in a wheelchair, but I’m not prepared to sit and do nothing for the rest of my life. The support and care I have received throughout my life drives me on to help more and more. I have been part of the Foundation for over 50 years and I want to give something back. It’s more than just fundraising for me, it gives me a purpose and that’s why I continue to do it. It keeps me motivated and gives me the opportunity to give something back to a very worthwhile cause.
