Building Your Resources For A Better Life Author Philip E. DeVol Presented By Haley Chapin & Kim Whisenhunt

 The

Getting Ahead is a program designed as a way to help people living in poverty learn about how poverty impacts them and their communities

 It

helps people identify needed resources to help them improve their economic class and set goals

 To

help investigators understand the differences between classes

 Participants

of the program are referred to as Investigators and are compensated for their time  Each Getting Ahead session is run with 6-12 Investigators meeting once a week for 10-15 weeks  Phil DeVol, creator/author of Getting Ahead is also an author of Bridges out of Poverty  The program is not taught to the Investigators but rather is led by a facilitator who guides discussions and activities, who is also considered an Investigator

1. My Life Now – draw a mental model titled My Life Now”

2.Theory of Change – how to take charge of your changes and monitor how you are doing

3.The Rich/Poor Gap & Causes of Poverty –

understanding from different perspectives and plans that made by individuals, organizations and communities all impact poverty

4. Hidden Rules of Economic Class – Moving to a new class means learning their hidden rules

5. The Importance of Language – Formal/casual register, code switching and the language of negotiation

6. Eleven Resources – Financial, Emotional, Mental/Cognitive, Language, Social Capital, Physical, Spiritual, Integrity & Trust, Motivation & Persistence, Relationships & Role Models, and Knowledge of Hidden Rules

7. Self-Assessment of Resources – Listed above 8. Community Assessment – looking outward towards the community and its resources

9. Building Resources – Build economic stability 10. Personal and Community Plans – Develop a plan to move towards the future story

Graduates develop a voice in poverty issues and are now at the decision-making tables in our community

Results below and next few slides from the Indiana University study  399 Investigators from 19 sites across the US  55.8% unemployed  68.7% female / 31.3% male  37.64 Average age  48.8% never married, 21.9% in a domestic partnership,14% divorced, 12.1% separate, 1.4% widowed

93% stated that they felt Getting Ahead had been helpful for their lives  Each investigators was asked to identify the top five most important aspects of Getting Ahead 

Tri-Lakes Cares Getting Ahead Graduates – Class #2  27% increased their financial resources  9% increased their emotional resources  36% increased their mental resources  63% increased their language resources  18% increased their social capital  27% increased their physical resources  27% increased their spiritual resources  45% increased their integrity resources  45% increased their motivation resources  36% increased their relationship resources  45% increased their knowledge of hidden rules
