BUSINESS BA IT-Systemhaus supports Bundesagentur für Arbeit The IT department of Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA) is responsible for all data centre services and 1,900 networked sites with 170,000 workstations, 12,400 servers and three high-availability data centres which is one of the largest IT environments in Germany. The IT infrastructure is under constant expansion and improvement to satisfy the growing business needs. Every month more than 31 million emails, 18 million money transfers (with a monetary value of around €9 billion), 8.5 million postal letters and 43 million printed pages are processed by the IT infrastructure. To manage these activities, BA requires professional and efficient IT support services with a demanding need for high levels of availability, performance and scalability across the IT infrastructure. If core IT systems were to fail, BA would – in the worst case – no longer be able to execute processes that enable its staff to log new jobs and/or pay unemployment benefit or family allowance. Business demands have to be realised quickly and economically. IT therefore plays a key role regarding business success of BA. “Data management and data security is essential for us,” points out Wolfgang Schneider, Manager of the Service Department for Storage and Windows at BA IT.

CHALLENGE Automatic backup for 1,500 branches and their IT infrastructure In 2009, the service department for storage and Windows at BA IT was faced with the challenge of redesigning the existing backup-to-tape solution and the manual transportation of tapes to a second, fire-protected area of the data centre and to establish an automated backup system across more than 1,500 branches. As well as the daily backup processes for business critical data, BA IT needed to redesign and implement new recovery and disaster management processes.

We needed a solution to centralise and automate our backup processes. Peter Seuß | Engineer and Project Manager

A clear business decision had to be made: which software solution should be used to facilitate this massive project? “If a problem occurs, we need to be able to recover lost data quickly to make sure processes will not be interrupted. If we lose data, we can no longer offer services to the unemployed and their families as well as companies that are searching for new staff,” explains Peter Seuß, IT Engineer and Project Manager within the Service Department for Storage and Windows at BA IT.

SOLUTION Data management with the arcserve product family After an extensive evaluation of the market, BA IT decided to install Arcserve D2D and Arcserve Replication and High Availability (RHA) in its 200 medium-sized data centres. The reason for this decision was the broad range of functions that the arcserve solution could offer, for example backup-to-disc, the incremental forever backups (Arcserve D2D) and the secured broadband-optimised replication of backup data via Arcserve RHA. Another reason to choose the arcserve product family was the competent and helpful support of arcserve sales and presales people. Today, 1,300 smaller locations and the data centres are protected by Arcserve Backup via a central Virtual-TapeLibrary (VTL). “Arcserve Backup has been a strategic tool for us for a long time,” states Peter Seuß.

BA is one of the largest users of the Arcserve product portfolio in the world. A team of five experts from BA IT plans, develops, executes and manages all backup processes. “Arcserve and its channel partner Fujitsu have always helped us in a professional way ever since we started our business relationship,” says Martin Renner, IT Engineer in the Service Department for Storage and Windows at BA IT. BA IT is also a member of the worldwide Arcserve beta programme for the Arcserve product portfolio.

Processes run automatically without manual assistance of our IT teams. Wolfgang Schneider | Manager of the Service Department for Storage and Windows

BENEFIT Optimised, automatically operated, cost-effective and efficient backup processes With Arcserve, BA IT has been able to optimise its backup and recovery processes. Business critical data from more than 1,500 decentralised branches is saved automatically without the manual intervention of an operator. The daily change of tapes and the manual transportation to a second, fire-protected zone are no longer necessary. The backup time for all data saving processes has been dramatically reduced, as it is now done on a block level and incremental basis, which are core functions of Arcserve D2D. All recovery processes are now operated centrally. Thanks to centralised backup data, BA IT is now able to perform all necessary steps for a disaster scenario in cases of emergencies. Failover systems are installed in BA’s data centre in Nuremberg for such a scenario.
