Materials

 Join a black or assorted print 2" x 31/2" rectangle to an

13/8 yards of black print (6510-99) for blocks, borders, and binding 1 fat quarter (18" x 22") each of 24 assorted prints (6508-30, 77, 88; 6509-30, 66; 6510-33, 88; 6511-66, 88; 6512-33, 77, 88; 6513-33, 66, 99; 6514-11, 40, 55; 6515-55, 66, 77; 6516-11, 40, 88) for blocks, inner border, and outer border 1 yard each of four assorted neutral prints (6509-44; 6511-44; 6514-44; 6515-44) for blocks, inner border, and outer border 21/8 yards of 108"-wide fabric for backing (Kim suggests Spiced Paisley 6368-44) 73" x 73" square of batting Standard quiltmaking supplies

Cutting

Please cut all pieces across the width of the fabric in the order given unless otherwise noted. For added versatility when stitching the patchwork units in this scrappy quilt, consider cutting a handful of extra pieces for each of the items specified below. From the black print, cut: 6 strips, 2" x 401/2". From 1 strip, cut 2 strips, 2" x 111/2". From a second strip, cut 2 strips, 2" x 141/2". 7 binding strips, 21/2" x 42" Reserve the remainder of the print. From the reserved black print and the 24 assorted print fat quarters, cut a combined total of: 36 squares, 41/4" x 41/4"; cut each square in half diagonally twice to yield 4 triangles (combined total of 144 small triangles) 108 squares, 37/8" x 37/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 216 large triangles) 29 squares, 31/2" x 31/2" 60 rectangles, 2" x 31/2" 60 rectangles, 1" x 31/2" 420 squares, 11/2" x 11/2" From the 4 assorted neutral prints, cut a combined total of: 36 squares, 41/4" x 41/4"; cut each square in half diagonally twice to yield 4 triangles (combined total of 144 small triangles) 36 squares, 37/8" x 37/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 72 large triangles) 60 squares, 31/2" x 31/2" 60 rectangles, 11/2" x 31/2" 336 squares, 11/2" x 11/2"

Piecing the Churn Dash Blocks and Segments

Sew all pieces with right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.  Join a black or assorted print and a neutral print 37/8" triangle along the long diagonal edges. Press the seam allowances toward the black or assorted print. Trim away the dog-ear points. Repeat for a total of 72 pieced half-square-triangle units measuring 31/2" square, including the seam allowances. Reserve the remaining large assorted print triangles. Make 72.

Join an assorted neutral print 11/2" x 31/2" rectangle to the narrower assorted print rectangle of the joined pair. Press the seam allowances toward the assorted print rectangle. Repeat for a total of 60 pieced square units Make 60. measuring 31/2" square, including the seam allowances.

 Lay out four pieced half-square-triangle units, four pieced

square units, and one assorted print 31/2" square in three horizontal rows as shown. Join the pieces in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the pieced squares. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances toward the middle row. Repeat for a total of 13 pieced Churn Dash blocks measuring 91/2" square, including the seam allowances. Reserve the remaining pieced half-square-triangle units and rectangle units.

Make 13.

 Lay out two reserved pieced half-square-triangle units and one reserved pieced square unit in alternating positions as shown. Join the units. Press the seam allowances toward the pieced square. Repeat for a total of eight pieced churn dash segments measuring 31/2" x 91/2", including the seam allowances. Reserve the remaining pieced half-square-triangle units. Make 8.

Piecing the Double Nine-Patch Blocks and Segments

 Lay out five assorted print 11/2" squares and four assorted

neutral print 11/2" squares in three horizontal rows as shown to form a nine-patch unit. Join the squares in each row. Press the seam allowances away from the neutral squares. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances away from the middle row. Repeat for a total of 84 pieced ninepatch units measuring 31/2" square, including the seam allowances. Make 84.

 Lay out five pieced nine-patch units and four assorted neutral print 31/2" squares in three horizontal rows as shown. Join the pieces in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the neutral squares. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat for a total of 12 pieced Double Nine-Patch blocks measuring 91/2" square, including the seam allowances. Reserve the remaining pieced nine-patch units.

 Lay out three nine-patch segments and two churn dash

segments in alternating positions. Join the segments. Press the seam allowances toward the nine-patch segments. Join the neutral side of a reserved half-square-triangle unit to each end of the pieced strip. Press the seam allowances toward the nine-patch segments. Repeat for a total of two pieced strips measuring 31/2" x 511/2", including the seam allowances, to form the top and bottom inner border rows.

Make 2.

 Referring to the pictured quilt, lay out the A and B rows and the pieced top and bottom inner border rows to form the quilt center. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances open. The pieced quilt top should now measure 511/2" square.

Adding the Middle Border Make 12.

 Lay out two reserved pieced nine-patch units and one

assorted neutral print 31/2" square in alternating positions as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the neutral square. Repeat for a total of 12 pieced nine-patch segments measuring 31/2" x 91/2", including the seam allowances. Make 12.

Piecing and Assembling the Quilt Center and Inner Border  Lay out three Churn Dash blocks and two Double Nine-

Patch blocks in alternating positions. Join the blocks. Press the seam allowances toward the Double Nine-Patch blocks. Join a nine-patch segment to each end of the pieced strip. Press the seam allowances toward the segments. Repeat for a total of three pieced A rows measuring 91/2" x 511/2", including the seam allowances.

 Join a black print 2" x 111/2" strip to a black print 2" x 401/2"

strip. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat for a total of two pieced strips measuring 2" x 511/2", including the seam allowances. Join these strips to the right and left sides of the quilt top. Press the seam allowances toward the black strips.

 Join a black print 2" x 141/2" strip to a black print 2" x 401/2"

strip. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat for a total of two pieced strips measuring 2" x 541/2", including the seam allowances. Join these strips to the remaining edges of the quilt top. The quilt top should now measure 541/2" square, including the seam allowances.

Piecing and Adding the Outer Border  Join a black or assorted print and a neutral

print 41/4" triangle along the short diagonal edges as shown to make a pieced triangle. Press the seam allowance toward the assorted print. Trim away the dog-ear points. Repeat for a total of 144 pieced triangle units.

Make 144.

 Join a pieced triangle and a large assorted

Row A. Make 3.

 Lay out three Double Nine-Patch blocks and two Churn

Dash blocks in alternating positions. Join the blocks. Press the seam allowances toward the Double Nine-Patch blocks. Join a churn dash segment to each end of the pieced strip. Press the seam allowances toward the Double Nine-Patch blocks. Repeat for a total of two pieced B rows measuring 91/2" x 511/2", including the seam allowances.

 Referring to the pictured quilt, lay out 18 pieced three-

triangle units end-to-end. Join the units. Press the seam allowances toward the large triangles. Repeat for a total of eight pieced strips measuring 31/2" x 541/2", including the seam allowances.

 Using the pictured quilt as a guide, join two pieced strips

along the long edges. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat for a total of four pieced border strips measuring 61/2" x 541/2", including the seam allowances.

 Join a pieced border strip to the right and left sides of the

quilt top. Press the seam allowances toward the black middle border.

Row B. Make 2.

 Lay out four assorted print 31/2" squares in two horizontal

rows of two squares each to make a Four-Patch block. Join the squares in each row. Press the seam allowances open. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat for a total of four pieced Four-Patch blocks measuring 61/2" square, including the seam allowances.

 Join a pieced Four-Patch block to each end of the remaining pieced border strips. Press the seam allowances toward the Four-Patch blocks. Join these pieced strips to the remaining sides of the quilt top. Press the seam allowances toward the black middle border. The pieced quilt top should now measure 661/2" square, including the seam allowances.

Completing the Quilt

Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt the layers. Join the black print 21/2" x 42" strips to make one length and use it to bind the quilt.
