MIDWEEK ADVENT SERVICE--03 December 2014—12.15pm
Our order of service follows the canonical hour called Sext, which is the Latin word for “six”. It refers to the sixth hour of the day, which is noon. The canonical hours, which include Matins and Vespers, which we also pray, were especially followed in the monasteries. The psalms make up a good part of these times of prayer. There is rich symbolism with Sext. Noon is the time Jesus was on the cross; and the sun, a symbol of divine splendor and the grace of God, is also its brightest at noon.
P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me! C: Make haste to help me, O LORD! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. Psalm 119. 9-16 [Antiphon: Luke 1.38]
P: And having come in, the angel Gabriel said to Mary, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!" P: How can a young man keep his way pure? C: By guarding it according to your word. P: With my whole heart I seek you; C: let me not wander from your commandments! P: I have stored up your word in my heart, C: that I might not sin against you. P: Blessed are you, O LORD; C: teach me your statutes! P: With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. C: In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. P: I will delight in your statutes; C: I will not forget your word. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalm 80. 1,2, 14-15, 17-18 [Antiphon: Luke 1.38] P: Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel. C: You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. P: Stir up your might C: and come to save us! P: Turn again, O God of hosts! Look down from heaven, and see; C: have regard for this vine, P: the stock that your right hand planted, C: and for the son whom you made strong for yourself. P: But let your hand be on the man of your right hand, C: the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself! P: Then we shall not turn back from you; C: give us life, and we will call upon your name! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
P: And having come in, the angel Gabriel said to Mary, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!" Short reading: Amos 9. 11-12 “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the LORD who does this. P: Remember us Lord, for the love you bear your people. C: Come to us as a Savior. Sermon: Advent—Jesus Established And Extends His Church 1. In His First Coming Jesus established His NT Church 2. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; for Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen P: O Lord, hear our prayer. C: And let our cry come to You. P: Stir up, we beseech You, Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins, and be saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. P: O gracious Jesus, at this hour You bore our sins in Your body on the tree of the cross so that we, being dead to sin, might live to righteousness. Have mercy on us, we pray You, both now and at the hour of our death, and grant us, together with all other Christian people, a godly and peaceful life in this present world and through Your grace eternal glory in the life to come, where, with the Father and Holy Spirit, You live and reign ever one God, world without end. C: Amen. P: Prepare our hearts, Lord, by the power of Your grace. When Christ comes may we be able to receive from His hand the bread of heaven at the feast of eternal life; through Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us praise the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Silent Prayer PRAYER: Almighty, merciful God, You visited us by Your Son in the flesh. We implore You, that in Your mercy You would fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we may never forget such love; for the sake of Your dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
