After four games in the Arizona desert last weekend, the Cal baseball team hits the road again for a threegame series against the Cal Poly Mustangs. The teams get things going Friday night with a 6 p.m. matchup at Baggett Stadium, followed by a 4 p.m. game Saturday and the 1 p.m. series finale Sunday afternoon. The Bears went 1-3 in the Angels College Classic in Tempe, Ariz., to begin their season. They dropped games to Cal State Bakersfield, Pepperdine and Northwestern before finishing strong with a 10-6 victory over BYU. Four Bears drove in at least two runs in that game, as Cal notched a season-high in runs scored. Reigning Golden Spikes Award winner Andrew Vaughn picked up where he left off after a sensational sophomore season, hitting two home runs, collecting five RBI and reaching base 14 times in 20 plate appearances in Cal’s season-opening tournament. Grant Holman and Connor Mack also went deep over the course of the weekend. The Bears are in a stretch where they play 12 of their first 14 games away from Berkeley. After this threegame series, they play a four-game home-and-home set with Saint Mary’s from Feb. 28-March 3. Then they’ll fly to Baton Rouge, La., for a three-game series with national power LSU, which began the season ranked No. 2 in the country by d1baseball.com and Baseball America.

BY THE NUMBERS

4 2

The number of Cal players who had two or more RBI in Monday’s 10-6 win over BYU. The charge was led by sophomore Sam Wezniak, whose three-run triple erased a 6-3 deficit in the sixth inning. Grant Holman, Quentin Selma and Andrew Vaughn all drove in two apiece to lead the Bears’ first doubledigit scoring output of the season. The number of attempted base stealers thrown out by catcher Korey Lee in the Bears’ first two games last weekend. The junior nailed CSU Bakersfield’s Eric Charles trying to steal second in the season opener. Then the next day he got Pepperdine’s Matthew Kanfer at second. That was an encouraging sign as Lee is in his first season as Cal’s primary backstop.

.700 14 2

Through four games, Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn has posted an on-base percentage of .700. In 20 plate appearances, he’s been on base 14 times. The 2018 Golden Spikes Award winner hit in the leadoff spot in the opener, then settled in as the No. 2 hitter for the next three games. So far the Bears have already used 14 pitchers. However, that’s not a big surprise consider the Bears have a young staff and are operating without a traditional starting rotation at this point. Head coach Mike Neu has used at least four pitchers in each of the team’s four games so far.

It’s a quick turnaround this week, as Cal had just two days off between wrapping up the Angels College Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and boarding a bus for San Luis Obispo on Thursday to face Cal Poly this weekend.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS

Last meeting: Cal took two of three from Cal Poly to begin the 2017 season. Cal Poly’s 2018 Record: 30-27, 15-9 Big West • Cal Poly brings back lots of experience from last season, returning 20 letterwinners and 10 members of the pitching staff. •The Mustangs were picked to finish fourth in the nine-team Big West in a preseason vote by conference coaches. •Though Cal Poly returns plenty of players from 2018, they watched two very important players depart in outfielder Alex McKenna (the Big West Field Player of the Year in ‘18) and catcher Nick Meyer, the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. •1B Tate Samuelson is a top returner after earning honorable mention All-Big West honors last season as a freshman. He hit .280 with 5 homers, 38 RBI and 30 runs scored. •Though the Mustangs were swept by Righthanded reliever Taylor Dollard, a junior, also earned all-conference honors with a 2.43 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 40 2/3 IP. •Junior OF Bradlee Beesley is off to a terrific start through four games, entering this weekend 9 for 16 with 6 RBI.

on the mound early on. All four signed with Cal in November 2017.

PRESEASON ACCOLADES

After winning the 2018 Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top amateur baseball player, the honors continue to role in for 1B Andrew Vaughn. He was named to the preseason watch list for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award, and the Santa Rosa native was a preseason first-team All-American by Baseball America, D1baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Vaughn spent the past two summers playing with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, and he hit .308 for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod League in 2018.

MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

Matt Flemer joins Cal’s coaching staff to assist Neu with the pitchers. It’s a homecoming for Flemer, who was a key reliever on the 2011 Cal squad that made an improbable run to the College World Series. Flemer went 4-2 with a 1.83 ERA that season and notched six saves in a teamhigh 30 appearances. He went on to play seven seasons in the Rockies organization, reaching Triple-A and posting a 43-40 record over 143 career outings.

KEEPING A GOOD THING GOING

Darren is the son of 19-year Major League outfielder Dusty Baker, who won three Manager of the Year awards while skippering the San Francisco Giants.

Sophomore Darren Baker looks to build on an impressive freshman campaign at second base. He’ll have the same double play partner from 2018 in junior shortstop Cameron Eden. And sophomore Sam Wezniak returns at the hot corner. Korey Lee takes over at catcher in his junior season. Oakland A’s and Florida Marlins. After their weekend trip to San Luis Obispo, the Bears will take on Saint Mary’s in a four-game home-and-home series beginning next Thursday, a 7:05 p.m. game which will serve as Cal’s home opener. The teams will meet again at 7:05 in Berkeley next Friday, then play in Moraga for weekend games that each begin at 1 p.m.

Cal finished on a strong note in 2018, winning seven of its final 10 games to finish 15-15 in Pac-12 play and a tie for fifth in the conference. That accounted for Cal’s third top-five finish in conference play over the past four years.

KEY PIECE MISSING

Right-hander Jared Horn was expected to be a veteran leader of the starting rotation coming The Bears’ 36-man roster includes a whopping 14 out of the gate this season. But a day before the opener last week, Horn fell ill and wound up freshmen. Ten of those newcomers are pitchers, having an appendectomy in Phoenix. The junior and the lack of returning experience on the staff means many of those pitchers will be holding down is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. As a sophomore, he went 5-5 with a 6.15 ERA. But significant roles. Joe Ammirato, Sean Sullivan, he had some shining moments. 3 Diego. He rang up a career-high nine strikeouts in beating Cal State Bakersfield. Overall, Horn made six starts last season in which he went at least five innings and surrendered two or fewer earned runs.

EARLY IMPACT

Freshman designated hitter Grant Holman only went 3 for 11 in the Angels College Classic, but his hits did some damage. He homered in his first collegiate game against CSUB, then delivered a two-run double that helped secure a win over BYU. A two-way threat, the 6-foot-6 right-hander also pitched in relief against Northwestern, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs. The native of Chula Vista, Calif., went 29-1 with a 1.10 ERA over his career at Eastlake High School. He was just as dominant with a bat in his hands, hitting .390 with 20 homers during his prep career. As a junior, he was named the CIF San Diego Section Player of the Year. Turn back the clock further, and Holman grabbed headlines by throwing a no-hitter for Chula Vista in the 2013 Little League World Series. The game went seven innings, making Holman the first pitcher to throw an extra-inning no-hitter during the LLWS since 1979.

DRAFT CLASS

The Bears continue to send players into the professional ranks, with five selected in the Major League Baseball draft last June. Outfielder Tanner Dodson was selected in the Competitive Balance Round B (71st overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays, pitcher Aaron Shortridge (fourth round)

and outfielder Jonah Davis (15th round) went to the Pirates, catcher Tyrus Greene was picked by the White Sox in the 16th round and pitcher Joey Matulovich went in the 20th round to the Milwaukee Brewers. It marked the second time in the past three drafts that five or more Cal players were selected.

MULTI-TASKER

The outfield corps gets a boost this season from the addition of Brandon McIlwain, a redshirt sophomore who sat out 2018 after transferring from South Carolina. One of the best all-around athletes on the team, McIlwain spent the fall playing quarterback for Cal’s football team. He appeared in 10 games and completed 62 percent of his passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 403 yards and four more scores. McIlwain appeared in eight games for the South Carolina baseball team in 2016 but didn’t play in 2017. He also started three games at quarterback for the Gamecocks in 2016. McIlwain has started one game in right field so far and appeared in three games overall, going 0-for-4.

ARMAN HAMMER

Lefty Arman Sabouri was an effective reliever last season for Cal, and the junior is proving his versatility so far in 2019. With the Bears foregoing a traditional starting rotation to this point, Sabouri served as the “opener” for two of Cal’s first four games. He made the season-opening start vs. CSU Bakersfield and fired two scoreless innings. Two

days later, he started again against Northwestern and surrendered one run over two innings. As a sophomore last season, Sabouri appeared in 20 games and went 5-2 with a 3.07 ERA and one save. In 44.0 innings, he struck out 48 and walked just 11. He showed the ability to go multiple innings or match up against left-handed batters, and Cal already is tapping into his versatility again. McIlwain has started one game in right field so far and appeared in three, going 0-for-4.

FLOWER POWER

Center fielder Max Flower made an impact last weekend in the Angels College Classic. The junior from nearby Lafayette went 6-for-15 with two runs and two RBI, drawing starts in the third, fourth and fifth spots in the batting order. Flower also was a factor defensively, making two diving catches in center field and a sliding grab against BYU after shifting over to right field. As a sophomore last season, Flower hit .287 and his 30 RBI ranked third on the team.

LINEUP SHUFFLE

The Bears’ first four games saw several different batting order combinations. Cal has had six position players start every game so far, but only one of them, No. 9 hitter Connor Mack, has batted in the same slot in each of those four games. And Mack has provided some offense from that bottom spot. The sophomore left fielder connected for his first college homer and drove in four runs total last weekend in the Angels College Classic.

ANDREW VAUGHN -- A SEASON TO REMEMBER • In 2018, became first Cal player to ever win Golden Spikes Award • The National Player Of The Year (Perfect Game/Rawlings) • Pac-12 Player Of The Year • Hit .402, third-highest batting average in school history • His 23 home runs tied Cal’s single-season record • School-record .819 slugging percentage
