SOUTH WOOTTON JUNIOR SCHOOL Learning Together, Achieving More
Calculations Guide for Parents
There have been many changes in the way in which mathematics is taught so this guide is to aid your understanding of how we teach calculation strategies in this school. It is designed to help you, help your child learn. Have a look at how things have changed since you were at school. Hopefully, you will be able to see the benefits of the new approaches.
Covered in the booklet are the four main operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Research tells us that it is fundamental to develop pupils’ conceptual understanding (through the use of physical objects and pictures) to enable them to successfully use and apply their mathematical skills in various situations. The calculations strategies in this booklet reflect this. Please note that the strategies in the booklet shown will be the only ones we teach in school.
If you would like further exemplification of each operation, please visit the school website where you will find the full Calculations Policy. Alternatively, make an appointment to see one of the Maths Subject Leaders, Miss Bland or Miss Jay who will be able to provide you with further details.
