Alexandra Joel Guest Speaker Morning Tea ‘Rosetta: A Scandalous True Story’ Join Alexandra Joel for morning tea on Monday, 8 August. In 1905 Alexandra Joel’s great-grandmother escaped her safe Melbourne life, deserting her respectable husband and five-year-old daughter to run away with a halfChinese fortune teller called Zeno the Magnificent. The pair went to London, where Rosetta said she was American and Zeno claimed to be a brilliant Japanese professor. Together they entranced famous writers, scientists, aristocrats and royalty. But Rosetta never saw her child again. This is the compelling story of Alexandra’s quest for the truth about this extraordinary woman. Alexandra is also the author of Best Dressed: 200 Years of Fashion in Australia and of Parade: the Story of Fashion in Australia. Both books detail the development of fashion, style and national identity. She has been a contributor to a number of national magazines as well as The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald.
