hen we think of leadership we typically think of the traditional leadership model used by the military. There is a very specific chain of command and in some cases a certain level of respect that comes with rank. For many years, businesses operated under this same model. In business today, is becoming harder and harder to find organizations that use this traditional model. Most organizations strive to reduce the layers of management and tend to be moving towards a matrix type of organization. The emphasis has changed from an authoritative model to a participative, team-oriented model.
— Leadership challenge is assuring that each team member maintain personal responsibility for their goals and actions. Arguably, leadership today is much tougher than in times past. No longer is it expected nor acceptable for a leader to give unilateral orders. The leader may not have the benefit title or rank. A leader must have a new set of skills in
order to be successful. Prevalent leadership traits are developing people, influencing people to work to their potential, and removing barriers to allow people to be successful. Empowerment is an important part of management. Leadership challenge is assuring that each team member maintain personal responsibility for their goals and actions. Take a moment to review your leadership qualities. If you need training in any particular areas, I encourage you to pursue it. Participation in an NAPM-MD committee may be another good way to build your leadership experience. Each of us in this profession has leadership challenges every day. Each of us is a leader. We have leadership roles within our organization and leadership of our suppliers. I encourage you to exercise leadership every day.

JOB SEARCH HELPFUL HINTS by Melissa Gallagher, First Vice President Whether people are unemployed due to "9-11", the economy, "creative" corporate financial practices, etc., or they are just seeking new opportunities, it appears to me that a lot of people are searching for jobs. Recently, I was one of these people. It is very stressful and exhausting. Here are some tips that may help you either now or in the future. Three of the greatest resources that I can think of are: the library, the internet, and people. I spent an entire evening at the library skimming through every book on the shelf regarding job searching. I chose two books each in the following areas: resumes, cover letters, interviews, and how to identify job opportunities. The internet is one of the best tools for identifying job opportunities. There are general as well as specialized sites for you career field. These are very helpful as long as you set the criteria to what you are really looking for by utilizing either a key word search or a career field search; also, remember to set the parameters to the geographical region in which you are interested. Additionally, most newspapers such as the Sun Paper and the Washington Post also have job search sites on line. This saves money and time. A great feature is setting up an account (usually free of charge) to have these sites automatically email you any new postings that fall into the criteria which you set Despite these benefits, there is one significant drawback to the internet: increased competition. Now job seekers worldwide have access to job postings. You may be competing against literally hundreds of candidates for the same position. I highly suggest that you write your resumes and cover letters on your own computer so that you can tailor each specifically to the exact position and company for which you are applying. Some companies utilize software programs to scan responses and may rate the top candidates based on the appearance and frequency of key words. Even if you are submitting it to a company that utilizes traditional methods for reviewing resumes, it is important that you specifically address those qualifications that the job posting mentions. This will increase your chance of getting an interview. Remember the purpose of a cover letter and resume is to land you an interview, not to get you a job. The perspective from which you
write your resume may determine whether or not it stands out from the rest. Although it is important to mention your work experience and level of responsibility, do not turn it into a lengthy job description. Instead, highlight your outstanding accomplishments that set you apart from all others who held similar positions. Your cover letter is your first impression on the hiring manager. It needs to grab his or her attention. State in the first paragraph some astonishing thing that you’ve done that their company is in need of. Make them want to meet you badly. Be sure to send it directly to the hiring authority/department head for which you would work in the company. Identify this person through the company’s web site or by making a phone call. Also, send a copy to the director of human resources so that he or she does not feel by-passed. Don’t limit yourself to openings that are "perfect" fits. Sometimes you may be interested in working for a company, but the only posted position is one for which you are over-qualified. In this case, send your cover letter (with the attached resume) as described above being sure to highlight your major accomplishments and skills. This may get you an interview and visibility by the right people in the company. If they are impressed enough with you, they may either choose to create a new position for you or keep you in mind for any future openings at your level. At the very least, you have another person with whom to network in the future. Finally, be sure to network. You can use your contacts not only to help you find job openings, but also to help you to get visibility of your cover letter and resume in front of the right people, at the highest level possible. That is, inquire whether or not any of your contacts know anyone that currently works at the company to which you are applying. If they know someone, especially if it is a vice president or director, and this associate forwards your resume to the hiring contact, it will give you a better chance of at least having the hirer personally see your cover letter and resume versus being buried in a stack. Hopefully I’ve provided some useful information to make your present or future job search easier. Remember that changing jobs is also an opportunity to open doors to an exciting new career.
