he Calgary Hitmen, with the support of their giving fans and sponsors, to date have raised nearly $60,000 and collected over 20,000 teddy bears for charities across Southern Alberta this season. Here are some of the highlights.

The Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss saw 23,096 stuffed toys collected for over 50 charities across Southern Alberta. A game worn jersey auction raised an additional $5,334 for the CBC Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive. Hitmen players, fans, minor hockey coaches and off-ice officials grew moustaches in November to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer Canada. The Movember campaign raised a total of $12,000 with the Flames charitable arm, the Flames Foundation for Life, matching the Hitmen total for a sum donation of $24,000.

Subway Soccer Day was held in November with over $11,000 raised for the Fields for Life Artificial Turf Campaign through the sale of mini-soccer balls for an intermission contest and 50/50 proceeds. In addition, over 1,100 pounds of food was collected for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank. The Third Annual City TV/Kraft Shake Up the Dome event in December was a huge success as fans brought non-perishable food items to the game and received Kraft Dinner boxes, totaling a cash equivalent of $13,527.80 for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank.

Dodge Skate with the Hitmen was held December 28 as Hitmen fans took to the ice post-game to skate with the players and collect autographs. Tim Hortons Minor Hockey Night saw one lucky fan walk away with the Trip for Two to the MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Lunar Celebration, sponsored by Trico Homes, Calgary Stampede, Canada Safeway and Hopewell Residential Communities, saw hundreds of fans walking away with prizes. Hitmen players also spent several hundred hours in the community volunteering their time at various community events. On January 9 at Springbank Park and February 5 in Okotoks, the Hitmen joined minor hockey teams on the ice for Pond Hockey by ENMAX Energy. On January 17 and February 8, the Hitmen put eight minor hockey teams through a series of off-ice workouts at the NSD (National Sports Development) and Cardel Hang with the Hitmen event. The team also partnered with Cardel Homes for Kidcasters on October 26 and March 2, where CTV Reporter Lisa Bowes taught junior high school students the importance of research, writing and delivery, with Hitmen players fielding questions. The Hitmen hit the floor hockey gym at eight different elementary schools this season to promote exercise and nutrition while partnering with Community Kitchens to feed the entire school.

The Wendy’s Hockey Calgary Novice Development Program saw the Hitmen visit 14 Novice Associations across the city, conducting on-ice skates and autograph sessions. All in all it’s been a hugely successful season off the ice, with the community impact to grow even more once final stats are in from the Beattie Homes Hockey Mums Fight Breast Cancer Campaign, and the EllisDon/Telus/Pattison Outdoor Distress Centre Game tonight.
