Media Credentials Note to the Media
The 2009 UAB Baseball Media Guide has been assembled in an effort to assist you in your coverage of the Blazers. We have tried to anticipate many of your questions and hope the answers can easily be found on the following pages. However, if you have any additional questions or needs, please do not hesitate to contact the UAB Athletic Media Relations Office at (205) 934-0722. We appreciate your interest in UAB baseball and look forward to working with you throughout the year. There are certain policies and procedures laid out on this page by which we ask you to abide. These policies and procedures are designed to take your needs, as well as the needs of our student-athletes and coaches, into consideration and to create a good working situation for all.
Coach Interviews
All requests for interviews with head coach Brian Shoop and assistant coaches should be made through the Athletic Media Relations office. Please contact Tyson Mathews, assistant director of media relations, to make the necessary arrangements.
Player Interviews
Interviews with our student-athletes are encouraged. All player interviews must be arranged through the Athletic Media Relations office. This policy is intended to ensure that all requests are filled, as well to ensure that interviews are conducted at the best time for both the media representative and the student-athlete. Players are usually available before and after practice, depending upon class schedules. Telephone interviews may also be arranged. Every effort will be made to arrange telephone interviews, however players’ telephone numbers
will not be given out. Student-athletes are instructed not to participate in telephone interviews unless they are arranged through Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office.
Dorms, Locker Rooms & Training Facilities
Student-athletes’ dorm rooms and apartments, the locker room, the training facilities and weight rooms are off limits at all times to everyone except authorized personnel. The same policy applies to the UAB locker room at road venues.
Baseball Practices
Most UAB baseball practices are open to the media. Please call the Athletic Media Relations office to confirm practice times, to let us know of your plans to attend practice and to make specific interview requests. Taped interviews may be conducted before or after practice but only with prior arrangement through Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office.
NCAA Guidelines & the Media
Media representatives should be aware of several NCAA rules that apply to student-athletes. • Coaches and university officials cannot make comments on prospective student-athletes until they sign a National Letter of Intent. A coach cannot comment on a prospective student-athlete who has only verbally committed. • Student-athletes are not permitted to endorse commercial products. • Student-athletes may not be used in advertisements or endorsements of products, including media-related publications. • Photographers cannot provide student-athletes with free photographs or slides.

Please contact Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office to arrange for press and photo credentials for each Blazer home game. Scouts are also welcome to request credentials for each home game, however working members of the media will be given priority for assigned seating.
Radio
The Young Memorial Field press box is set up to host visiting radio. Please contact Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office at least one week prior to the contest to make arrangements for your broadcast. Due to limited space in the press box, in the case that UAB’s ISP Sports Network is also providing a broadcast, an area will be set up outside of the press box for visiting radio. We apologize for the inconvenience and will do everything to ensure that your visit to Young Memorial Field is an adequate and enjoyable one.
Media Services
• Fax and e-mail service for post-game information is available. Please make your request prior to the day of the game with Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office. • Stat monitors can be provided for “live” media at UAB home games. Please notify the Athletic Media Relations office if you will need a monitor for your on-air production. • Stat packets and updated cumulative season statistics will be available in the press box following each home contest. Telephones and fax machines are available in the Athletic Media Relations office. • Game programs, game notes and updated statistics will be available in the press box upon your arrival at each UAB home game.

BLAZERS ISP SPORTS RADIO BROADCASTS The Blazers ISP Sports Radio Network and WSPZ-AM 690 have partnered to bring Birmingham-area fans 12 regular season games in 2009. Additionally, numerous broadcasts will be available online through the All-Access package at www.uabsports.com. UAB’s Conference USA tournament games will also be carried either on WSPZ or through www.uabsports.com David Crane, “The Voice of the Blazers” and Director of Broadcasting for the Blazers ISP Sports Network, is in his second season as the play-by-play commentator for UAB baseball. In addition to broadcasting Blazer baseball games, Crane is also the play-by-play voice for UAB football and men’s basketball. David Crane “All of us at the Blazers ISP Sports Network are looking forward to the upcoming baseball season,” Crane said. “We are extremely excited about being able to again broadcast a select number of UAB games this year on WSPZ-AM 690. I know the Blazer fans will enjoy the coverage, and I look forward to continuing to increase that coverage in the years to come. Brian Shoop is one of the premier coaches in America, and I know the future is bright for UAB baseball. We certainly hope our radio and internet broadcasts will enhance the program’s visibility.” Prior to his arrival at UAB, Crane spent 11 years as a member of the University of Alabama’s broadcast team, where he worked extensively with the Crimson Tide baseball program. The Decatur, Ala., native is a 1994 graduate of the University of Alabama. Crane spent nine seasons working with the Crimson Tide baseball program, including the 1999 season that resulted in a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

GAMEDAY EXPERIENCE
Thousands of fans passed through the gates at Young Memorial Field in 2008 to take in the UAB baseball gameday experience. The Blazer Diamond Girls and the UAB Marketing department serve as the driving forces behind the UAB baseball gameday experience. The Diamond Girls serve as a vital component of the UAB baseball program, assisting with a widerange of tasks from running merchandise tables at home games to assisting the coaching staff with day-to-day administrative duties and serving as “Bat Girls.” A very visible fixture at UAB home games, the Diamond Girls help with promotional efforts across campus in an effort to improve attendance at Blazer home games. They also assist the UAB Marketing department with in-game promotions to help provide fans with an enjoyable gameday experience. “The Diamond Girls have done a great job accepting our ideas, and they have been eager to help out and have done so with smiles on their faces,” said UAB assistant coach Perry Roth. “We believe that the Diamond Girls will help make game days at Young Memorial Field a fun place to be for students and fans.” The Diamond Girls have been involved with the team’s “Bowling Night,” “100-Inning Wiffleball Game” and “Meet the Team Banquet.” Behind the scenes, the girls assist the staff with mailings and other administrative office tasks.

Media Credentials Note to the Media
The 2009 UAB Baseball Media Guide has been assembled in an effort to assist you in your coverage of the Blazers. We have tried to anticipate many of your questions and hope the answers can easily be found on the following pages. However, if you have any additional questions or needs, please do not hesitate to contact the UAB Athletic Media Relations Office at (205) 934-0722. We appreciate your interest in UAB baseball and look forward to working with you throughout the year. There are certain policies and procedures laid out on this page by which we ask you to abide. These policies and procedures are designed to take your needs, as well as the needs of our student-athletes and coaches, into consideration and to create a good working situation for all.
Coach Interviews
All requests for interviews with head coach Brian Shoop and assistant coaches should be made through the Athletic Media Relations office. Please contact Tyson Mathews, assistant director of media relations, to make the necessary arrangements.
Player Interviews
Interviews with our student-athletes are encouraged. All player interviews must be arranged through the Athletic Media Relations office. This policy is intended to ensure that all requests are filled, as well to ensure that interviews are conducted at the best time for both the media representative and the student-athlete. Players are usually available before and after practice, depending upon class schedules. Telephone interviews may also be arranged. Every effort will be made to arrange telephone interviews, however players’ telephone numbers
will not be given out. Student-athletes are instructed not to participate in telephone interviews unless they are arranged through Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office.
Dorms, Locker Rooms & Training Facilities
Student-athletes’ dorm rooms and apartments, the locker room, the training facilities and weight rooms are off limits at all times to everyone except authorized personnel. The same policy applies to the UAB locker room at road venues.
Baseball Practices
Most UAB baseball practices are open to the media. Please call the Athletic Media Relations office to confirm practice times, to let us know of your plans to attend practice and to make specific interview requests. Taped interviews may be conducted before or after practice but only with prior arrangement through Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office.
NCAA Guidelines & the Media
Media representatives should be aware of several NCAA rules that apply to student-athletes. • Coaches and university officials cannot make comments on prospective student-athletes until they sign a National Letter of Intent. A coach cannot comment on a prospective student-athlete who has only verbally committed. • Student-athletes are not permitted to endorse commercial products. • Student-athletes may not be used in advertisements or endorsements of products, including media-related publications. • Photographers cannot provide student-athletes with free photographs or slides.

Please contact Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office to arrange for press and photo credentials for each Blazer home game. Scouts are also welcome to request credentials for each home game, however working members of the media will be given priority for assigned seating.
Radio
The Young Memorial Field press box is set up to host visiting radio. Please contact Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office at least one week prior to the contest to make arrangements for your broadcast. Due to limited space in the press box, in the case that UAB’s ISP Sports Network is also providing a broadcast, an area will be set up outside of the press box for visiting radio. We apologize for the inconvenience and will do everything to ensure that your visit to Young Memorial Field is an adequate and enjoyable one.
Media Services
• Fax and e-mail service for post-game information is available. Please make your request prior to the day of the game with Tyson Mathews in the Athletic Media Relations office. • Stat monitors can be provided for “live” media at UAB home games. Please notify the Athletic Media Relations office if you will need a monitor for your on-air production. • Stat packets and updated cumulative season statistics will be available in the press box following each home contest. Telephones and fax machines are available in the Athletic Media Relations office. • Game programs, game notes and updated statistics will be available in the press box upon your arrival at each UAB home game.

BLAZERS ISP SPORTS RADIO BROADCASTS The Blazers ISP Sports Radio Network and WSPZ-AM 690 have partnered to bring Birmingham-area fans 12 regular season games in 2009. Additionally, numerous broadcasts will be available online through the All-Access package at www.uabsports.com. UAB’s Conference USA tournament games will also be carried either on WSPZ or through www.uabsports.com David Crane, “The Voice of the Blazers” and Director of Broadcasting for the Blazers ISP Sports Network, is in his second season as the play-by-play commentator for UAB baseball. In addition to broadcasting Blazer baseball games, Crane is also the play-by-play voice for UAB football and men’s basketball. David Crane “All of us at the Blazers ISP Sports Network are looking forward to the upcoming baseball season,” Crane said. “We are extremely excited about being able to again broadcast a select number of UAB games this year on WSPZ-AM 690. I know the Blazer fans will enjoy the coverage, and I look forward to continuing to increase that coverage in the years to come. Brian Shoop is one of the premier coaches in America, and I know the future is bright for UAB baseball. We certainly hope our radio and internet broadcasts will enhance the program’s visibility.” Prior to his arrival at UAB, Crane spent 11 years as a member of the University of Alabama’s broadcast team, where he worked extensively with the Crimson Tide baseball program. The Decatur, Ala., native is a 1994 graduate of the University of Alabama. Crane spent nine seasons working with the Crimson Tide baseball program, including the 1999 season that resulted in a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

GAMEDAY EXPERIENCE
Thousands of fans passed through the gates at Young Memorial Field in 2008 to take in the UAB baseball gameday experience. The Blazer Diamond Girls and the UAB Marketing department serve as the driving forces behind the UAB baseball gameday experience. The Diamond Girls serve as a vital component of the UAB baseball program, assisting with a widerange of tasks from running merchandise tables at home games to assisting the coaching staff with day-to-day administrative duties and serving as “Bat Girls.” A very visible fixture at UAB home games, the Diamond Girls help with promotional efforts across campus in an effort to improve attendance at Blazer home games. They also assist the UAB Marketing department with in-game promotions to help provide fans with an enjoyable gameday experience. “The Diamond Girls have done a great job accepting our ideas, and they have been eager to help out and have done so with smiles on their faces,” said UAB assistant coach Perry Roth. “We believe that the Diamond Girls will help make game days at Young Memorial Field a fun place to be for students and fans.” The Diamond Girls have been involved with the team’s “Bowling Night,” “100-Inning Wiffleball Game” and “Meet the Team Banquet.” Behind the scenes, the girls assist the staff with mailings and other administrative office tasks.
