Callins, defense route Ponca City 62-13 The Guthrie High School football team dominated their home opener from start to finish against Ponca City on Friday night with the BlueJays winning the game 62-13. The story of the game was the Guthrie running game and their stingy defense. Callins finished the night with 113 yards on 18 carries, with four touchdowns. The defense limited the Wildcat offense to just 167 total yards, forced five turnovers and scored two touchdowns off two of them. The BlueJays came out focused from the opening kickoff, as Callins would return it for 67-yards to give Guthrie excellent field position to start the game. Six plays later, Callins would put the BlueJays up 7-0 on a 4-yard run. This would be the first of four first half touchdowns for Callins. Idae Alexander would put the BlueJays up 14-0 on the next possession after scoring on a 4-yard carry of his own. The next possession for the BlueJays would end in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Reed Roberts to Donovan Jordan to give Guthrie the quick 21-0 lead with 2:16 seconds left in the first quarter. Ponca City would respond with a touchdown of their own on the next drive, as they would allow Raylon Gaines to get behind the BlueJay secondary and Michael Mongold would connect with him on a 74-yard touchdown pass to trim the Guthrie lead to 21-6. This is the second week in a row that the BlueJay secondary has gave up a touchdown on a blown coverage. Head Coach Rafe Watkins believes that is due to
the youth of the secondary, but he also believes that it will be fixed as the kids get more experience through the year. “The two broken plays has been on our two young sophomores and the game is still going 100 mph to them. They got out of position and Ponca City made a nice play.” Watkins said. “It was just a break down there, it isn’t anything that can’t be corrected, that will just come along with more game experience. By week six, when we are getting ready for Carl Albert, I don’t think we will be making those mistakes.” The second quarter would be the Kai Callins show, as he would score on a 1-yard, 12-yard and 7-yard touchdown runs to give the BlueJays a 42-6 lead going into halftime. Watkins believes that Callins played an exceptional game, but most of the credit should go to the big boys up front. “Kai did alright, the offensive line blocked really well,” Watkins said. “A lot of it was because of what Ponca City was giving us and they really didn’t have an answer for our Ace package. We were able to blow them off the ball. I thought Kai stepped up, Idae stepped up, Reed stepped up, all three guys ran the ball well and I think that was because of the way our offensive line was able to have a great night.” In the second half, the BlueJays would get a oneyard touchdown run by Roberts before the defense would score the final two touchdowns of the game. Roberts went 8-13 with 150 yards passing and a touchdown. So far this season, Roberts has been more of a game manager,
but Watkins expects that to change soon as the BlueJays get set to face tougher competition. “We wanted him to throw the ball a little more this week, we could’ve got in that ace formation and handed the ball off every time and not worried about losing,” Watkins said. “He threw the ball exceptionally well, he did a good job and this week we wont be able to pound it down Enid’s throat, so we’ll have to throw the ball more in the coming weeks.” L’Liott Curry would recover a fumble in the end zone and Bo Davis would intercept a pass and take it 65-yards back to the house to give the BlueJays the 62-6 lead. Ponca City would add a late touchdown with 9 seconds left to give the game its final score of 62-13. The BlueJays are averaging 323-yards and 54 points a game. While their defense is limiting offenses to just 122-yards and 9.5 points a game. They dominated this game from start to finish, and will now have to set their sights on Enid High School this Friday, as this should be Guthrie’s first real test of the season. “We haven’t played anybody, so there is no need to get excited yet,” Watkins said. “This week will show a lot more about us and what we have. Enid is a quality opponent and a very good football team. They throw the ball really well and they have three solid receivers and good quarterback. This is probably going to be our second hardest game of the season behind Carl Albert. They are bigger than us up front, so we will really see what we are made of this week.”
