CARBON SEQUESTRATION & AGRICULTURE

Most countries that submitted an Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) in 2015 included mitigation and adaptation actions in the land sector. Yet, the proposed actions are diverse across countries and are not always detailed, which highlights the need for a common and ambitious goal for mitigation and adaptation in agriculture while ensuring food security. A voluntary action plan was proposed for agriculture under the Lima-Paris Agenda for Action (LPAA), which is the fourth pillar of the climate agreement to be negotiated at COP21. Titled ‘4/1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate’, this initiative highlights the role of soils and organic matter in addressing the three-fold challenge of food security, adaptation of food systems to climate change, and mitigation of agricultural emissions(1). It was officially launched on December 1st, at the French Pavilion during COP21 with a declaration signed by 40 countries, by international agencies, research organizations, farmer’s organizations and NGOs. The side-event “Carbon sequestration & agriculture” aims at putting forward the potential role played by the agricultural sector in combating climate change and ensuring food security. Its specific objective is to point out ways to better integrate solutions in agriculture, especially soil carbon sequestration in INDCs. What needs to be done to achieve this specific objective? Which tools, approaches and preparedness will be needed by all stakeholders (researchers, policy makers, NGOs, private sector) for implementing INDCs that combine adaptation and mitigation while ensuring food security?
