Carry Forward Request Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) When are Carry Forward Requests due? • A Carry Forward Request is due 30 days prior to the end date of the funding year. What if the total unexpended funds are $20,000 or less than the total annual awarded funds? • A formal request is not required; funds will be automatically carried forward to the next funding year. • Any unexpended balance over $20,000 of the annual awarded funds will require formal approval via the Carry Forward Request form. What if we do not want to carry forward the unexpended funds? • The unexpended funds must be returned to the Simons Foundation within 60 days following the end of each funding year, as noted in the award letter. Why must we submit a Carry Forward Request 30 days prior to the end date of the funding year? • Carry Forward Requests are due 30 days before the end date of the funding year so that the Simons Foundation can approve or deny the use of funds to be carried over by the start date of the next funding period. Do I have to submit a Renewal Scientific Progress Report if I submit a Carry Forward Request? • No, the Carry Forward Request includes the Renewal Scientific Progress Report. Are Carry Forward Requests the same as No-Cost Extension Requests? • No. Different forms are used, with different requirements. • A Carry Forward should be used to request to carry forward unexpended funds from one funding period to the next funding period. • A No-Cost Extension should be used to extend the end date of a grant and to request to use unexpended funds during this period without requesting additional funding. What period should be reported on the Carry Forward Request? • Only the most recent funding period completed should be reported in the Carry Forward Request. • The Carry Forward Request is not a cumulative report of the entire project. What if I have a subcontract? • The contact Principal Investigator’s (PI’s) institution will submit a Carry Forward Request for any subcontract. • The contact PI must submit one overall Carry Forward Request for the entire project, even if the contact PI’s institution is not requesting to carry forward funds. • Do not submit a separate Carry Forward Request form for the subcontract. What if I have multiple PIs at different institutions? • The contact PI must submit one overall Carry Forward Request for the entire project, even if the PIs are at different institutions and not everyone is requesting to carry forward funds. Is there a page limit? • No, but the reports should be concise.
