Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects The Common Core State Standards Initiative established a goal for developing a set of common language arts standards that help ensure college and career readiness in literacy by the end of high school. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects are a result of that goal. The standards are research and evidence based, aligned with college and work expectations, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked. The standards emphasize achievements but do not mandate how the achievements should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed. The following information provides a brief overview of some key points and organizational features of the standards. Organization of the CCSS for English Language Arts (ELA) A. The ELA standards have three major groupings. 1. Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects K-5 2. Standards for English Language Arts 6-12 3. Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects B. The ELA standards include College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards and K-12 grade-specific standards 1. CCR Anchor Standards establish broad standards for each strand; the CCR Anchor Standards are consistent across all grade 2. Grade-specific standards based on the CCR Anchor Standards define end-ofyear expectations for each grade 3. The CCR Anchor Standards ensure a cumulative progression of skills designed to enable students to meet college and career readiness expectations by the end of high school. C. The ELA standards are organized into four strands with grade-specific standards for K-8 and grade-band standards (9-10 and 11-12). Reading addresses multiple types of text. 1. Reading A. Literary Text B. Informational Text C. History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 2. Writing 3. Speaking and Listening 4. Language D. Organization of each strand 1. Reading: 10 CCR reading standards grouped by category A. Key Ideas and Details B. Craft and Structure C. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas D. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity 2. Writing: 10 CCR writing standards grouped by category A. Text Types and Purposes B. Production and Distribution of Writing C. Research to Build and Present Knowledge D. Range of Writing 3. Speaking and Listening: 6 CCR speaking and listening standards grouped by category
