Presented by Lucy Calkins and Mary Ehrenworth In this day long workshop, Lucy Calkins and Mary Ehrenworth will set you up to achieve cohesive, high level writing instruction using the newly released Units of Study in Argument, Information, and Narrative Writing, Grades 6-8. We encourage you to attend with teams, so that you can truly achieve cohesion across grade levels. Whether you are planning for your state, your district, your school, or your grade level, your writing work needs to intersect wisely with that of your colleagues. This day, therefore, is open to teachers, administrators, coaches, and literacy leaders. Lucy and Mary will help you to deeply understand the implications of the Common Core State Standards, and how it can affect your curriculum. They will show you how the standards and units of study in argument, information, and narrative writing help writers develop the skills and habits they need to write well. Lucy and Mary will demonstrate a few of the high leverage instructional methods as well, so that you feel confident with inquiry work, small group guided practice, and conferring. You will learn about implementing an assessment system that will help you norm grade level expectations, monitor growth, and most importantly, support students in setting goals and assessing their own writing. You’ll be introduced, naturally, to teaching points, but also to mentor texts and other tools. The day will revolve around the series, Units of Study in Argument, Information, and Narrative Writing. We know that in schools, it would be better if teachers could spend less time planning and more time responding to student work.

Because middle school schedules mean you are tremendously pressed for time, and you have a lot of students to assess, instruct, and support, Lucy and Mary will also look at how to forge connections across reading and writing, and how to plan for crystal clear writing instruction in the middle school schedule. They’ll help you look across the curriculum, so that you begin to think about planning strategic curriculum. Bring your team, and join us in planning for your students’ success as writers.
