“FORTY YEARS AGO PEOPLE SAID SHE THROWS LIKE A GIRL, SHE RUNS LIKE A GIRL, SHE JUMPS LIKE A GIRL, BUT TODAY THEY SIMPLY SAY... SHE’S AN ALL-AMERICAN.”
Wayne State female student-athletes have made significant strides in the last 40 years paving the fields and courts for their WSU sisters now and in the future. We ask you to continue allowing more young women at WSU to compete at the NCAA level. By helping provide them program support you are actively assisting in bringing home future Warrior championships.

Celebrating Women’s Athletics Wayne State Athletics invites you to join us in celebrating 40 years of women’s athletics on campus and honoring women in sports across the globe. The W Week celebration runs April 18-24, 2015. The week kicks off with a brunch the morning of April 18 at 10 a.m. Events featured during W Week all epitomize what women’s athletics at Wayne State is - competitive success, academic achievement and community engagement. Wayne State women’s athletics holds a unique place in the history of intercollegiate athletics. WSU diver Dacia Schileru became the first female in the history of the NCAA to compete in a NCAA Championship event. The significance of the event is recognized as one of the Top 25 defining moments in the history of the NCAA and is prominently displayed in the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis. Dacia Schileru competed in the 1973 NCAA championship shortly after Title IX passed in 1972. That dive changed intercollegiate athletics around the country, and eventually, (albeit seven years later) led the NCAA to sponsor championships in women’s sports. A lot has changed since then, but it all started 40 years ago with a dive, off a platform by a Wayne State female student-athlete, that sent a ripple through the athletic landscape that forever altered intercollegiate athletics.
