Centennial High School Swim and Dive Rules and Expectations 1.50 - SCHOLASTIC STANDING / SCHOLARSHIP (From FCS Athlete-Parent Handbook, page 15) 1.51 To be eligible to participate, practice, and/or try out in interscholastic activities, a student must be academically eligible. A student is required to pass classes that carry at least 2.5 Units counting toward graduation the semester immediately preceding participation. Exception 1: First semester ninth grade students. a) Passing in all GHSA member schools is a grade of seventy (70). b) Students participating in junior varsity or “B” team competition must meet all scholastic requirements. c) If an eligible student transfers from a school that uses a block-schedule format to a school using a traditional format (or vice versa) and that student cannot get a full schedule of classes with equivalent credit in the semester of the transfer, the school may petition the Executive Director for a waiver of this rule for the first semester after the transfer occurs. d) For schools offering courses with yearlong grading, eligibility must be computed for each semester. (1) At the end of the first semester, the school must determine that the student has a grade of 70% or higher in classes carrying at least 2.5 Units. (1) The second semester grade will be the grade given for the entire course and shall include the end-of-course test grade. (1) Remediation programs designed to bring the student’s first semester grade up to 70% or higher may be used (in accordance with GHSA guidelines) if the school allows such programs for all students. 1.52 Students gain or lose eligibility on the first day of the subsequent semester. The first day of the Fall semester shall be interpreted as the first date of practice for the first sport. a) Exception: Students who successfully complete summer school to maintain eligibility become eligible the last day of summer school. (1) Summer school is an extension of the previous semester and courses may be: a. remedial in nature where a previously-taken course is repeated in its entirety with a new grade being given. b. enrichment in nature where a new course is taken that results in new credit being earned. (2) A maximum of two (2) unit credits earned in summer school may be counted for eligibility purposes. NOTE: Additional credits may be earned in credit recovery programs or make-up programs after the start of the new semester. (3) Summer school credits earned in non-accredited home study programs or non-accredited private schools may not be used to gain eligibility. Accreditation recognized under the rule shall be from the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC) or a regional accreditation agency (such as SACS) or the Georgia Private School Accreditation Council (GAPSAC). (4) An independent study course taken in summer school must be regionally accredited and accepted by the school system for graduation credit. (b) Courses completed after the beginning of a new semester may not be used to gain eligibility for that semester. Example: night school classes, correspondence courses, etc. (c) Independent study courses taken during the school year must meet the criteria of 1.52 (a) 4. 1.53 Students must accumulate units towards graduation according to the following criteria: (a) First-year students (entering 9th grade) are eligible academically. Second semester first-year students must have passed courses carrying at least 2.5 units the previous semester in order to participate. (b) (b) Second-year students must have accumulated five (5) total units in the first year, AND passed courses carrying at least 2.5 units in the previous semester. (c) (c) Third-year students must have accumulated eleven (11) units in the first and second years, AND passed courses carrying at least 2.5 units in the previous semester.

5

(d) (d) Fourth-year students must have accumulated seventeen (17) units in the first three years, AND passed courses carrying at least 2.5 units in the previous semester. (e) (e) Students may accumulate the required units for participation during the school year and eligibility will be reinstated at the beginning of the next semester.

Section II. ATTENDANCE

Practices A. Seasonal swimmers are expected to be at every scheduled practice. If a swimmer needs to miss a practice, they must notify the coaches in person (a parent may email if sick) prior to that practice. Attendance will be tracked in two-week (ten day) cycles. Swimmers are expected to attend 90% of morning practices, and 1 afternoon practice per week (11 practices – 9 morning, 2 afternoon – per attendance cycle). If a swimmer has a question regarding the attendance policy, please speak directly to Coaches Dale or Jacobi. B. Swimmers who are practicing with a USA team such as Swim Atlanta or Dynamo, or divers practicing at a private club, should continue to practice with their year around team. Athletes are expected to meet their club coaches’ expectations regarding practices and meets. C. Swimmers who miss practice for school sponsored events; fall sports banquets, NHS, etc. must notify the coaches prior to missing practice. The coaches will determine if the absence is excused or unexcused. D. Swimmers are expected to be on time and prepared. Swimmers are expected to be ready to dive in at the specified time. Swimmers who are present but not in the pool at the specified time will be marked absent. E. Failure to adhere to the attendance policy will result in being “benched” for one upcoming meet, at the Coaches’ discretion.

Holiday Practices Swimmers are expected to practice during the holiday breaks in order to stay in condition. Missing scheduled practice over break is an unexcused absence. If you must be out of town, please make every attempt to practice in a hotel or health club pool.

Meets A. If a swimmer or diver is absent from school on the day of a meet, or the day before, (Friday, for Saturday meets) they cannot swim in the meet (GHSA rule).

6

B. If there is an unexpected conflict (not noted on Meet Availability form), and a swimmer is unable to attend a meet, he/she must notify the coaches in writing ([email protected]) 7 days prior to the meet. C. Not every swimmer will be able to swim in every meet, but we will do our best to give every swimmer opportunities to improve their times throughout the season. D. Any requests for specific events must be made in writing 7 days before the meet. Otherwise, the coaches will put each swimmer in events that will make up the most competitive line-up. We will do our best to honor requests, but sometimes athletes might have to compete in an event because it will benefit the team. E. The following meets are mandatory for all swimmers: Fulton County Championships (January 10th) and 2 additional meets, for a total of 3. All swimmers are encouraged to attend as many meets as possible beyond the requirement for lettering. Each swimmer will have the opportunity to declare meet availability via the Google Form at registration. Changes to meet availability must be discussed with the coaches at least 10 days prior to the upcoming meet. Please see Coaches Dale or Jacobi if you have any questions regarding your specific circumstance. Even if a swimmer does not make required times for the above meets, they are strongly encouraged to be available to come and support the team. Due to entry limitations at some events, all swimmers will not be able to be entered into events. F. McCallie Invitational will be held November 17th and 18th in Chattanooga, TN. This meet will be optional for any swimmer or diver. Each swimmer or diver that goes must pay their own way. (More information about this meet will be discussed at our informational meeting). G. All meet attendance issues will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the coaching staff.

Section III. AWARDS Varsity Letters for Swimmers: Lettering is ultimately at the coaches’ discretion based upon attitude, conduct, and performance. Team members will be eligible for a Varsity Letter if the following criteria are met: A. Adhere to the Fulton County and Centennial Swim & Dive Code of Conduct. B. Adhere to the Attendance Policy Seasonal Varsity is required to attend 90% of morning practices, and two afternoon practices, per attendance cycle. Special circumstances such as an illness, that requires additional absences will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Year-Round Varsity members are required to adhere to attendance policy laid out in the previous section regarding their circumstance. Additionally, year-round swimmers must remain in good standing with their club (no disciplinary issues, skipping both CHS and club meets, etc.). 7
