The Cougars are 10-1 and came in third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Mineral Water Bowl pits the highestfinishing teams from the MIAA and NSIC that didn’t qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs. Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri of the MIAA along with Minnesota State-Mankato and Minnesota-Duluth of the NSIC made the 24-team Division II playoff field. BACK ON TRACK: UCO has equaled its victory total of the previous four seasons combined (eight) in reaching the eight-win mark for the first time since the 2004 squad finished 8-2. The Bronchos haven’t won more than eight games since going 13-0 in 1998 (12-1 before a forfeit win). UCO IN THE POST-SEASON: The Bronchos have made 10 previous post-season appearances, qualifing for the NAIA playoffs six times and the Division II playoffs four times. UCO is 10-8 in the post-season, 11-7 with a forfeit victory. The Bronchos went to the NAIA playoffs in 1962, ‘72, ‘79, ‘82, ‘83 and ‘85. UCO won the national championship in 1962 with a 28-13 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in what was called the Camellia Bowl in Sacramento, Calif. and lost to Texas A&M-Kingsville 20-14 in the 1979 Palm Bowl that decided the NAIA national title. The Bronchos also claimed the 1982 national crown with a 14-11 win over Colorado Mesa. Central advanced to the Division II playoffs in 1996, ‘98, ‘99 and ‘03, making the quarterfinals in both 1998 and ‘03. ABOUT THE MWB: The Mineral Water Bowl started in 1948 and featured local high school teams the first four years before taking a twoyear break. The game resumed in 1954 and pitted small-college teams from around the region for the next 22 years. The bowl was cancelled in 1975, but returned in 1992 as a junior college post-season game and stayed that way until 2000 when the current arrangement started between the MIAA and NSIC. MIAA teams have a 10-4 lead over the NSIC in the game, with Missouri Western owning four of those wins and Pittsburg State three. The Escelsior Springs Quarterback Club sponsors the event. RECEIVING VOTES: UCO received votes in the final regular season American Football Coaches Association top-25 poll, finishing with four points. That’s the equivalent of 33rd in the rankings. The Cougars earned 332 points in coming in 16th as the highest-ranking team that didn’t make the 24-team Division II playoffs. ABOUT THE SERIES: This is the first-ever meeting between the two. LAST TIME OUT: No. 6-ranked Pittsburg State scored on its first five possessions to take a 27-7 halftime lead en route to handing UCO a 41-14 regular season-ending defeat on Nov. 15. RB Jake Gandara rushed for 103 yards and scored both Broncho touchdowns on runs of one and 74 yards, but UCO was outgained 531-222 by the powerful Gorillas.

PROGRAM HISTORY: Central Oklahoma has a rich football tradition dating back to the early 1900s, with the Bronchos in their 109th season of intercollegiate competition. UCO ranks as the fourth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history with an all-time record of 607-378-46. The Bronchos picked up their 600th win in the 2014 season opener with a 26-7 road win over Fort Hays State. The Bronchos have captured 31 conference or division titles during their storied history and have won seven or more games in a season 39 times. Individually, UCO has had more than 500 all-conference players and 114 All-Americans. Twenty players have made it to the National Football League and former star Keith Traylor won three Super Bowl rings (two with the Denver Broncos, one with the New England Patriots) during a 17-year pro career. The Bronchos have also had eight Harlon Hill Trophy candidates, the award that goes to the Division II Player of the Year. ON THE AIR: All UCO games are broadcast live on 99.7 Hank FM. Veteran broadcaster David Garrett calls the action, with former UCO All-American John Fitzgerald adding color commentary. YOUTH IS SERVED: UCO once again features an extremely young team this season, which has been demonstrated every game. The Bronchos have 27 underclassmen (freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores) on the 44-player offensive and defensive two-deep for the Mineral Water Bowl. Eighteen of those underclassmen are on the offensive side, including nine (five sophomores, three redshirt freshmen and one true freshman) in the starting lineup. RUN TO WIN: The Bronchos have won 36 straight games dating back to 1993 when rushing for 250-plus yards. UCO has had three 250-plus rushing games this season -- 338 vs. Washburn, 303 vs. Missouri Southern and 263 vs. Lindenwood. ABOUT THE OFFENSE: UCO enters the Mineral Water Bowl averaging 29.3 points and 378.1 yards a game. The Bronchos feature a balanced attack, averaging 189.6 yards a game rushing and 188.5 passing. UCO has had six games with 400-plus yards total offense this season, with a high of 489 (285 rushing, 204 passing) coming in a season-opening 26-7 win over Fort Hays State. RED ZONE SCORING: UCO has had great success in the red zone this season, having scored on 41 of 46 possessions (89.1 percent) inside its opponents’ 20 yard line with 30 touchdowns (24 rushing, six passing) and 11 field goals. That leads the MIAA and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II. The Bronchos are fourth in the league and 61st nationally in red zone defense as opponents have scored on 73.8 percent (31-of-42) of their opportunities with 22 touchdowns (15 rushing, seven passing) and nine field goals. THIRD DOWN SUCCESS: UCO ranks third in the MIAA in third down success at 43.5 percent, having converted 70-of-161 chances. The Bronchos are 19-of-39 (48.7 percent) on third-down conversions in the fourth quarter. HOLD ON TO THE BALL: A big key to UCO’s success this season has been avoiding and creating turnovers. The Bronchos are second in NCAA Division II in least number of turnovers with 10 (five interception, five fumbles) while ranking first in the conference and fifth nationally in turnover ratio at plus-16, having forced 26 (15 interceptions, 11 fumbles). UCO has had five turnover-free games this season after having just three in the previous three years combined.

ALL-MIAA SELECTIONS: Central Oklahoma had 15 players earn recognition on this year’s All-MIAA Team. The Bronchos had no first-team selections, though quarterback Chas Stallard was named Freshman of the Year. Running back Jake Gandara, defensive tackle Kenny Allen and safety Matt Pruitt earned second-team honors, while wide receiver Marquez Clark, linebacker Chass Glaspie and offensive lineman Brandon Waggoner were third-team picks. Stallard and eight other players earned honorable mention honors – wide receiver Christian Hood, offensive lineman Landon Chappell, defensive lineman Tyler Newton, defensive lineman Deontay Wilson, linebacker Malcolm Howard, defensive backs Cody Jones and Levonte Douglas and place-kicker Seth Hiddink. THE COACH: It hasn’t taken Nick Bobeck long to get a storied Central Oklahoma program back on track. Bobeck in his third year at the helm and has led the Bronchos to an 8-3 record this season with a third-place finish in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association after the team was predicted to come in 10th in the 12-team league by conference coaches. It’s UCO’s first winning season since 2008 and the first eight-win campaign since 2004. The Bronchos have captured two national championships and are the fourth-winningest program in Division II history, but had experienced five straight losing seasons before breaking through this year. Bobeck, who became UCO’s 13th head coach on Jan. 4, 2012 following a sparkling four-year head coaching stint at junior college powerhouse Navarro (Texas) College, has a 12-19 record with the Bronchos. Nick, who played at UCO and then was a graduate assistant coach for the Bronchos, compiled a sensational 42-5 record at Navarro. The Bulldogs won the 2010 national championship along with three regular season Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) titles during his tenure there. Bobeck was a four-year letterman and two-year starter at fullback for UCO from 1999-02, earning first-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division honors as a senior. He stayed on with the Bronchos as a graduate assistant coach the next three seasons, helping UCO go 20-12 during that stint while making the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2003. Bobeck went to Texas A&M as an offensive line coach in 2006 when the Aggies finished 9-4 and earned a berth in the Holiday Bowl. He moved on to Navarro the following season and served as offensive coordinator in 2007 when the Bulldogs went 9-3 and won the conference crown. Nick took over as head coach the next year, with his first squad finishing 10-1 and ranked fourth in the final poll. An 11-1 campaign and No. 3 ranking followed in 2009. Bbbeck and the Bulldogs put it all together in 2010, following a season-opening loss with 11 consecutive wins to finish 11-1 and capture the NJCAA national championship. Navarro was 10-2 this past season, finishing fifth in the final ranking. Nick’s wife, Keely, is an assistant coach for the UCO softball team and helped the Bronchos go 41-17 in earning a Division II national tournament berth in 2014. They have two children -- a son (Tucker, born in April 2012) and a daughter (Miller, born in June 2014). SEASON RECAP: The tone for UCO’s turnaround season was set on a Thursday night in Hays, Kan. when the Bronchos opened the 2014 campaign with a resounding 26-7 rout of Fort Hays State. UCO dominated the game on both sides of the ball from the outset in not only notching the 600th win in program history, but also establishing new-found confidence and belief in the system set forth by third-year head coach Nick Bobeck. The result was an 8-3 record and third-place finish in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association as the Bronchos ended a five-year string of losing seasons and reached the eight-win plateau for the first time since 2004.
