Federal Small Business Minister Kelly O’Dwyer said residents should consider increasing how frequently they shop with small businesses. “Small businesses account for four in every 10 jobs, contribute over $340 billion of economic output and employ more than 4.5 million Australians,” she said. “As consumers, it’s our job to step up and show support to the small businesses which

give us so much, because they are the heart of our community.” The Economy of Shopping Small Report found more than 90 per cent of small business owners knew the names of their regular customers and 80 per cent actively took an interest in their personal lives. And even with a 10 per cent increase in prices, 42 per cent of Australians would continue to support a small family run business.

Homer’s manager Dan Chand keeps shoppers’ appetites satisfied.

IF YOU shop at Arndell Park, chances are you’ve taken a bite out of one of Homer’s delicious burgers. The local institution has kept the community well fed for nearly 10 years. Manager Dan Chand said customers came back for the flavour-packed offerings. “We have amazing burgers that are pretty famous,” he said. “People come here just for the burgers. We’ve got six types and they’re all really popular.” A few shops away, Elaine He and husband Ken Zhou flex their cooking skills from

their native China. The family-owned MNL Chinese has built a loyal following since it opened five years ago. “We like our customers and they like us too,” Ms He said. “Some customers come from Seven Hills and Parramatta to eat our food. “My husband learnt to cook in China and I was a waitress at his store.” Ms He said the satay beef and Mongolian lamb were popular with diners. “My food is made with fresh ingredients and we don’t cook with a lot of oil,” she said. “It tastes nicer.”
