Chalfont St Giles Village School Headteacher: Mrs. ES Peal

Dear Parent/Carer

Walk to School Month will take place for both the Infant School and the Junior School from Monday, 30th November to Friday 18th December 2015 The idea behind Walk to School Month is to increase children’s awareness of the dangers of walking and how to cross roads and walk on pavements safely. There are also considerable health benefits to walking to school that we can all benefit from! We would also like to use this opportunity to remind all parents that parking on School Lane and Silver Hill is dangerous. We would like to encourage you all to park in the designated areas such as Blizzards Yard car park and walk the rest of the way to school. Throughout the month, the children will receive an assembly per week about road safety and tips on making walks to school more interesting. There will also be a theme for each ‘Walk on Wednesday’. The themes are: •

2nd December – Snowy Scarf Wednesday (Make them truly wintery!)

9th December – Wolly Hat Wednesday (The sillier the better!)

16th December – Christmas Jumper Wednesday (Wear your best Christmas Jumper!)

If the children walk to school on Wednesday they can also wear their trainers. During Wednesday’s assembly, the person from each class with the best themed item of clothing will be awarded with hi-viz hedgehog stickers! The class teachers will talk to their classes about the WOW themes and take the WOW register to see how many children walked to school. The class with the highest number of walkers each week will get the CSG Golden Welly Boot to keep for the week, along with some extra Golden Time and the winning class over the whole month will get to keep the Golden Welly for the rest of the academic year!

How you can help your child and other children  

Set a good example. Use the Green Cross Code yourself. There is some useful information on this website http://think.direct.gov.uk/education/early-yearsand-primary/parents/5-to-7s/

1. Set a good example    

When you cross the road, don't take risks – your children will copy you. Remember to find a safer place to cross then stop, look and listen. Don't use your mobile phone while crossing the road. Wearing bright colours or reflective clothing helps motorists to see you.

2. Hold hands    

Always hold hands with your young child near traffic (or make sure they hold onto a buggy if you're pushing one). Make sure your child walks on the side of the pavement away from the traffic. If there is no pavement walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. If your child is using a tricycle, bicycle or scooter, don't let them ride ahead of you. Make sure that they get off the tricycle or scooter and hold your hand to cross the road. Where it is busy, it may be better to push the tricycle or scooter until you are somewhere quieter. If your child is using roller skates, don't let them go too far ahead of you – they may find it hard to stop at the kerb. Hold their hand while you cross the road.

3. Find the safest places to cross the road     

If you can, use traffic islands, zebra, pelican and puffin crossings, footbridges and subways. Cross where you can see clearly in all directions. Avoid crossing between parked cars if there is a safer place nearby (and be considerate yourself when parking.) Show your child how to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN Take part in some of the activities suggested on this website: http://think.direct.gov.uk/education/early-years-and-primary/parents/home-link-sheets/ They do not take long and are well worth it to make all of our children at CSG Village School safer.

Walking is good for children's health and fitness and we support parents who encourage their children to walk as much as possible. Taking your child in the car for short journeys puts more traffic on the road and adds to the problem.

Children can be safer on the streets if we show them how. Yours faithfully

Mrs E Peal Headteacher
