Challis Hex Drive Bushing System…Intuitively Superior Challis Grips, the custom gripmakers known for delivering outstanding 1911 grips, has delivered again with the Hex Drive Bushing System. The latest step in an ongoing quest to improve the connection between a man and his gun." “Why didn’t I think of that?” is the typical response when people see the revolutionary grip bushings by Challis Grips. The hex head makes the bushings intuitively superior to the slotted head design used for over 100 years. Sizes are available for standard thickness and slim grips. They are compatible with all US made 1911s and most grips. Here is why the system is getting rave reviews… Hex Drive:   

Easy. Easily installed with a 7/32” nut driver. Unlike slotted bushings, there is no risk of damaging the top of the bushing or slipping and scratching the frame. Positive alignment from the nut driver also reduces the risk of cross threading. Strong. The hex head is strong enough to transfer proper installation torque. When torqued to specification, Loctite is optional. Removable & Reusable. Bushings are easily removed with a 7/32” nut driver when needed for refinishing or changing grip thickness.

While the hex head is its most recognizable feature…one that will be appreciated whenever there’s a need to change bushings…it is only part of the Hex Drive Bushing System. Also included are two O-rings that deliver benefits every time you fire your gun. One Oring mounts around the bushing, the other goes around the grip screw. Here is why they are so valuable. By design, 1911 grips have holes that are larger than the bushings to allow for manufacturing tolerance. When grip screws are installed everything tightens up. Or does it? During recoil the oversize holes allow the grips to shift slightly on the frame, the very place you grasp the weapon…a place where you don’t want anything to shift. Our O-rings solve this and other problems. Bushing O-rings:  Secure. These O-rings are slipped over the bushings before the grips. As the grip screws are tightened, the O-ring is forced down and outward against the grip, eliminating any room for side shifting of the grips during recoil. It is clearly best for gun and grips to act as one. Many people report that the secure mounting improves the feel and performance of their gun.  Shock Absorption. The rubber O-rings absorb the shock of recoil, preventing the grip from impacting the bushings. This is especially valuable when shooting with fragile grips such as ivory and mammoth tooth.  Anti Scuff. Because the grips can’t shift on the frame during recoil, abrasive grips such as G10 will not scuff the frame. Grip Screw O-rings: 

 

Added Rigidity. This O-ring goes around the grip screw. As the screw is tightened, it is smashed between the top of the bushing and the underside of the screw, which extrudes it partially into the space between the hexagonal flats of the bushing and the grip. This gives added rigidity to the connection between the bushing and the grip. Compact. Unlike the #60 O-ring that has long been used with grip screws, this O-ring is small enough to allow the screw to fully seat and not stand proud of the grip. No Loose Screws. The smashed O-ring causes high friction at the underside of the grip screw, preventing it from loosening from repeated discharge. The grip screw O-rings and the bushing O-rings working together yield the best system available for eliminating loose screws. Less Torque. Because the O-rings prevent the screws from loosening, they do not need to be installed as tightly, preventing broken or stripped screws and bushings, and wood grips crushed under the head of the screw.

Not only is the Challis Hex Drive Bushing System easy to install, once on board your 1911 you can be confident that grips will stay secure and screws tight—as though gun and grips had become one with your hand—delivering benefits every time you deliver lead. After all, this is the point of connection between you and your weapon…why use anything less?
