Chapter 1 – Research task 2 The following activity can be used as an introductory or closing task, and is designed to complement the content of Chapter 1 in Galloway and Rose’s (2015) book Introducing Global Englishes (Oxon., UK: Routledge).
Categorizing English speakers Step 1 Listen to the interview with Marko Modiano and transcribe what you hear. You can either use the transcription guidelines below or use your own.

Step 2 Next, think of how to analyse your transcript. Please bear the following in mind when analysing the transcript: Qualitative data analysis involves organising, accounting for, and explaining the data, noting patterns, themes, categories, and regularities. Analysing qualitative data relies heavily on interpretation and this can lead to multiple interpretations of the same data. You must first decide what you want the data to do as this will affect the type of analysis you engage in. Analysis of qualitative data should be rigorous and subjected to careful, systematic treatment. It is helpful to look for themes/topics, ideas/concepts, terms/phrases, key words. It is helpful to ask yourself questions about the data you are coding, such as: What is going on? What are people doing? What is the person saying? What do these actions and statements take for granted?
Step 3 Present your findings and be prepared to discuss your analysis.
