Chapter 10 – Extra activity 1 The following activity can be used as an introductory or closing task, and is designed to complement the content of Chapter 10 in Galloway and Rose’s (2015) book Introducing Global Englishes (Oxon., UK: Routledge).

Discussion questions 1. In what ways has new technology impacted language in this example? Think about grammar and vocabulary use, language register, and linguistic representation (are they representing phonemes, morphemes, paralanguage, or something else?). 2. Examine the use of emoticons in the example. What is each of them representing? 3. Are emoticons a new variety of language, or are they just pictographic representations of emotion or expression? 4. In what ways have new forms of written communication permeated into the spoken form of language? Can you think of other examples such as ‘poke’ that were born from new communication and have permeated into the spoken form?
