Chapter 6 – Extra activity 1 The following activity can be used as an introductory or closing task, and is designed to complement the content of Chapter 6 in Galloway and Rose’s (2015) book Introducing Global Englishes (Oxon., UK: Routledge).

Europe Look at the two figures below which show language ability and language use in Europe, taken from Mollin (2006).

Discussion questions 1. Figure 1 shows the results of a survey where participants were asked, ‘Which languages can you speak well enough to take part in a conversation, apart from your mother tongue?’ What do the results tell us about English usage in Europe?

2. Figure 2 shows the changing proportions of drafting languages used in the EU over more than a decade from 1992 to 2004. English has clearly taken over the lead in the course of these 13 years. What does this tell us about English use in the EU? Do you think it is a prerequisite for career success? Is this in line with the EU language policy? 3. McArthur (2003, p. 57) states that, ‘The term “Euro-English” has often been used to mean “bad English perpetrated in Brussels”, where it has been associated with an even more hybridized and dubious phenomenon known as Eurospeak.’ Do you think a specific variety of English exists in Europe? What is the opinion of Marko Modiano in the audio interview (see Extra activity 4)?
