Woodland Estates

6th Annual Made in the Shade TBD September 2011

By Lisa Elinger

This has been the year of changes for Woodland Estates. Due to an opening and a transfer we have welcomed two new ladies to our house. One of the ladies, Joyce moved in May 6th and has been making us laugh every day since. She is a girly girl who loves to have her nails painted, barrettes put in her hair, fashion scarves, and loves to joke with our staff. We look forward to many joyous years with Joyce in our lives. Another lady joined us in September. She was hanging out in Las Vegas prior to living with us. Like Joyce, she also enjoys getting pampered. Her nails are done on a regular basis, her hair is done everyday, she wears make-up, and always finds a way to get us laughing. Her brother and sister-in-law visit regularly which makes her day.

Art Abilities 2011 October 23, 2011 Give to the Max Day TBD November 2011

Other than the above changes, Woodland Estates has stayed predictable with Mary asking for her coffee all day, Carma asking for her soda, and Rocco lounging in his recliner. We all have managed to stay pretty healthy throughout the year. Everyone loved the warmer weather by spending time outside at parks or Dairy Queen for a cold treat. With the snowy winter here, everyone is gearing up for the holiday season. Many will be spending time with family. Woodland Estates would like to wish everyone a warm and safe Christmas and New Years!

When we think about those who care, those who help others, those who contribute, volunteer time and resources, we think of our many wonderful donors who care about Homeward Bound and those we serve with severe disabilities. On December 1, Homeward Bound’s community partner, donor and friend, Greiner Construction, was honored with The Jefferson Award at an event hosted by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. The Jefferson Awards were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, US Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard, founder and chairman of the National Development Council, to honor community service. The Minneapolis/St. L to R: Todd Hayes, VP Greiner Constuction and Wolfgang Greiner, President Greiner Construction with Paul Business Don Priebe, CEO Homeward Bound and Stephen Journal recognizes Lanak, Board Chair Homeward Bound. 12 companies throughout the year for their philanthropic work. One of the 12 selected organizations will be honored at the national level. Greiner Construction employees donate hundreds of hours of volunteer service to Homeward Bound each year by completing projects such as siding homes, renovating bathrooms, and building decks. Homeward Bound is thrilled that Greiner Construction has received this recognition from the community.

The stakes have risen for this upcoming legislative session, with Minnesota’s deficit increasing to 6.2 billion.

At the risk of becoming repetitive, here is another reminder about Homeward Bound’s decision to join with other ARRM members in developing and facilitating a grassroots movement among its staff and family members. Letters to both family members and staff went out in midDecember announcing the formation of a “Grassroots Advocacy Committee”, with an initial meeting scheduled for January 10, at 4:00 pm at Homeward Bound’s corporate office. Interested or curious family members and staff may attend - I only ask that you give me a call beforehand at 763-746-4801. The purpose of the Committee will be to develop a strategy around potential Homeward Bound’s grassroots activities, survey Homeward Bound’s stakeholders about their interest in these activities, then arrange to develop recruitment, training, and oversight strategies to carry out and monitor these activities. We hope to get these activities in place in time to participate in ARRM’s day at the capitol on February 8th in the rotunda, at 1:30 pm. It is my expectation that the activities we chose to get involved in will range from the simple and quick, such as writing an email or letter to a legislator, to the more complicated, such as participating in a legislator’s site visit to a Homeward Bound home or visiting with legislators in their offices at the capitol. So there should be a wide range of choices for families and staff to make regarding how involved they want to be. The stakes have risen for this upcoming legislative session, with Minnesota’s deficit increasing to 6.2 billion.

Pine Valley By Martha Duclos

It has been a good year in Pine Valley. Everyone has been keeping busy doing their favorite activities. The snowy winter hasn’t kept the individuals from doing fun things like going to the Holidazzle Parade, going to the Timberwolves games, driving around to look at Christmas lights and going shopping. The Holiday party was great and everyone really enjoyed their families and friends that were able to come and enjoy the good food and conversation. All of the individuals have been able to participate in the craft activities that occur each month with some volunteers. Everyone really seems to enjoy making the crafts and new friends. Another favorite event at Brooklyn Park is when Don Anderson comes to sing twice a month. Some of the individuals participated in the “Made in the Shade” fund raising event. Thank you to everyone who donated money. We will put it to good use! This year has also brought some sadness. We lost our friend Scott J. this fall. He will be missed!
