Check for Understanding 1. The owner of a small convenience store notices that only 5% of customers buy magazines. a. What is the probability that the first customer to buy a magazine is the 4th customer? b. What is the probability that the first customer to buy a magazine is the 8th customer?

2. The colors of M&M candies in a typical bag have the following probabilities: P(brown) = 0.30, P(red) = 0.20 , P(yellow) = 0.20 , P(green) = 0.10 , P(orange) = 0.10, P(blue) = 0.10. You have purchased a bag of M&M's and select one candy at a time from the bag. What is the probability that the first red one is the 4th candy you select from the bag?

Answers 1a. This is a geometric distribution. The p(first purchase is from 4th customer)=(0.95)3(0.05)= 0.043

1b. This is also a geometric distribution. The p(first purchase is from 8th customer) = (0.95)7(0.05) = 0.0349.

2. In this geometric distribution, success = red candy, and so P(success) = 0.20 P(first red is 4th candy selected) = (0.80)3(0.20) = 0.1024
