A Letter to the Parents
Dear Parent/Guardian, Your son/daughter has expressed an interest in becoming a member of the Brunswick South Middle School Cheerleading Squad. If selected, there are certain personal and financial responsibilities and obligations, which he/she must assume in order to qualify. We feel you should be made aware of these responsibilities before you make the decision to allow your son/daughter to try out. The financial responsibilities include the purchase of new shoes, socks, body suit, bloomers, and a bow, however, other items might be necessary. Every cheerleader is asked to purchase the required clothing each year so there is a fresh, clean look from all of the cheerleaders and everybody looks in uniform when standing next to each other . There is also a paytoparticipate fee, $80 per season. Middle School Cheerleaders do not attend summer camp or competitions. Practices will begin in August for BOTH football and basketball cheerleaders. Actual dates and times will be given out at the beginning of August. After school begins, practices will continue approximately twice a week. Games and practices can fall on any day of the week, therefore, please check your schedule and be sure that you don’t have any conflicts before deciding to tryout (such as other sports, clubs or after school activities). Competitive cheer is NOT an excused absence from games or practices. Cheerleaders receive many valuable and rewarding educational experiences from cheerleading that they will remember long after they graduate. These activities will not only channel their enthusiasm and spirit in a positive way, but will also give them a sense of pride and accomplishment. Please read all of the information contained in this packet, so that there is no misunderstanding about what is expected from our cheerleaders and their parents. Your signature on the Parent’s Permission Form is your indication that you have read and understand all of the information and give your son/daughter permission to participate. If you have any questions regarding anything contained in the tryout packet, please feel free to contact me at
[email protected]. Sincerely, Mrs. Rinkes (Kidder Elementary)
[email protected] So…You want to be a Cheerleader?
The position of cheerleader is both a privilege and a big responsibility. You must realize that people will be watching you more than the average student. From the very moment of your selection, people will now recognize you and will watch your every action. This presents a tremendous responsibility for you to set the very best example you possibly can. There is no place for conceit and selfish attitudes. We have found that many individuals possess the physical talent and coordination and can, through hard work, learn the jumps and cheers to be a cheerleader. However, it is impossible to teach character, a trait that we consider of the utmost importance. We feel it is important to select students who not only have a physical talent, but also possess a sense of loyalty, integrity, honesty, cooperation, genuine kindness and concern for others, plus the enthusiasm and determination to be their very best. Now as you consider the possibility of being a cheerleader, please think about a few things: 1. What kind of person do I really want to be? 2. Can I be an effective cheerleader and still maintain my scholastic responsibilities? 3. Are there other things in my life that would interfere with me being a cheerleader? 4. Would I be a good leader and set the right example for others to follow? 5. Can I be cooperative and enthusiastic? Please think about these things because we expect a great deal from those chosen for our cheerleading squads. 3
