2013 Chicago Spire Traffic Impact Analysis
Group Members: Harris Hassan (group leader) Mario Martinez Alejandro Flores Alejandro Trujillo Jesus Alquicira

Introduction The purpose of this project is to analyze the traffic impact created by the development of the Chicago Spire super skyscraper. The location of the analysis is along Lake Shore Drive between Illinois St and North Water St in the Chicago Streeterville neighborhood. The Chicago Spire is designed to be a full residential skyscraper, at its planned height of 2,000 feet, 150 floors and with 1,190 units, it would have become the second tallest building in the world. A building of this magnitude requires a thorough traffic impact study since it will have an impact along many of the streets near the downtown area. For the purpose of the course learning objectives, certain high impact intersections will be address hence not to deviate from the scope if this class design project. The current development of the Chicago Spire is at a stop, however for the purpose of traffic impact studies, the building will be treated as a feasible project that will be open to the public as residential condominiums. Problem Statement The location of the Chicago Spire super skyscraper will require to determine necessary mitigation for the development as a result of increased traffic demands on the Streeterville roadway network. Located in Chicago, Illinois near the Millennium Park with close proximity to Lake Shore Drive (See Picture Below) the nature of the problem to be address will be intersections that lie near the building location. With 1900 residential units and close proximity to Lake Shore drive, this building will generate much traffic along the arterials and intersections. This study will focus on the most congested areas within range of the building, thus not to over compensate and lose track of the learning objectives. Chicago downtown, in its essence is a busy area. There are vehicles, trucks, CTA Busses, bikers, and pedestrians’ constantly causing the formation of queue’s and further delay. Investigating intersections of this nature will enhance our understanding of the topics in this course. Data collection of the nearest streets will be gathered as to obtain the future impact on the roads from the Chicago Spire. It is noted that the building lies between two river ways and next to a proposed park, data from these entities will be gathered as required. The collections
of data will include but not limited to the following: Data conditions on traffic volumes, level of service and alternate modes, traffic growth, factors such as a new park nearby, trip generation, trip distribution, mode split, and trip assignment. Depending on how much of an impact the study yields with regards to the intersections, solutions to the traffic congestions will be recommended. For high, medium, and low costs.
Alternatives High Cost: Demolish existing roadways to construct a completely new route system. Medium Cost: Adding an extra lane at locations of high traffic. Low Cost: Investigations to adjust signal timings for more optimal traffic flow. No new construction will be needed.
Sources of information Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), TRB Department of Transportation Traffic Manual (DOT) Trip Generation, ITE Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASHTO Work tasks • Data Collection • Establish Design Criteria/Constraints • Data Analysis • Develop Preliminary Design Alternatives, Refine Alternatives, Develop Preliminary Cost Estimates for Alternatives • Evaluate Design Alternatives • Prepare Design Report (write as you proceed) Schedule of tasks Tasks will begin immediately after the approval of the project. Exact days and timings are still being decided. The group of five will be split into sub groups in order to complete tasks more efficiently. (See attachment) Budget for tasks The hours it will take to complete will become clearer as the project goes on. We are estimating 30 hours each person. If more hours are needed, the group will collectively work longer. (See attachment)
