Chimborazo, Lesser Sum m its. The two easternm ost peaks of C him borazo had rem ained so far unclimbed. They were traversed on M ay 20, 1979 by the Ecuadorians W. V illacís and O. Omar, of the Polytechnical School of the E cuadorian army. These summits received the unofficial nam es of N. M artínez (5540 meters, 17,848 feet) and G arcía-Cazar (5560 meters, 18,242 fee t), altim eter figures. The new hut, “E dw ard W hym per,” is now available to m ountaineers. It can shelter 16 persons and has perm anent attendants. Built to com m em orate the centenary of the first ascent of Chim borazo, it was located on the south slopes of the m ountain, at 16,000 feet near the Thielm an G lacier.
