Homework Assignment 5

Fall 2013

A tow pushing barges on the Mississippi river has several tasks to perform. On a section of the river 1.5 mi wide and 6.4 mi long, the river flows south at 3.0 mph. The tow can run 7.0 mph with respect to the water. Task A is to push 18 barges 6.4 miles directly up river as shown in Fig. A. Task B. A group of eight barges had to be pushed directly across river as shown in Fig. B. The tow heads up river at the proper angle  to perform this task. Task C. Preparing to head back down river with a group of 24 barges, the tow heads directly across river 0.75 miles as shown in Fig. C. (Nearing the middle of the river the captain turns the tow on its axis during the last 0.05 mi so that it is headed straight down river. Assume the heading of the barge remains directly across river during this 0.05 mi maneuver.) Task D. The tow heads down river returning to its starting point as shown in Fig. D. Determine the Value Units 25. _____ _____ speed of the tow w.r.t. the ground in Task A 26. _____ _____ time required to make the trip up river in Task A 27. _____ _____ angle  in Task B 28. _____ _____ speed of the tow w.r.t. the ground in Task B 29. _____ _____ time required to make the trip across river in Task B 30. _____ _____ angle  in Task C 31. _____ _____ speed of the tow w.r.t. the ground in Task C 32. _____ _____ time required to move to the middle of the river in Task C 33. _____ _____ distance traveled down river in Task C 34. _____ _____ speed of the tow w.r.t. the ground in Task D 35. _____ _____ time required to make the trip down river in Task D
