Dear Christ Church Friends, I’m celebrating an anniversary! I have been with you for four years, and I can hardly believe it. These four years have surely flown by more quickly than any others in my life. I am so grateful for all that I have learned by being here with all of you—and for all that we have shared that has felt so meaningful. Thank you! Our highlight for May was another anniversary—the 160th of Christ Church. What a history this place has had. Special thanks to all of you who worked so hard to prepare our updated history—especially Gary Stearns. I hope that many of you have taken a copy home and found some time for reading. It is truly fascinating, and I think it will make you feel proud of our heritage. And special thanks to all of you who worked so diligently planning the festivities for the day itself—especially Reva Hart and others too numerous to mention. It was a great joy to meet our former vicar John Eberman and to have him deliver our sermon on that occasion. I was thrilled with our first organ concert and Choral Evensong, and I hope that we will have many more. Abundant thanks to Beckie Henry and our choir. If you have not been at church recently, perhaps you have not seen the new church sign. Virtually all the literature that I have read indicates that, in order for churches to be welcoming of new people, the most basic requirement is to have signage that is easily visible. Over the years, many outsiders have said to me that they had never noticed the presence of an Episcopal Church at the corner of Mulberry and Poplar. To address this situation, the Parish Life Committee has been working for two years on the design and acquisition of an appropriate and attractive sign. The sign was produced by John Mills of Mills Ironworks. Unfortunately, due to Elizabethtown codes, we were unable to put a sign in the front of the church, but we believe that it is in a spot which allows for good visibility, and we hope that it will facilitate our desire to reach out to the community.
We are nearing the end of the Great Fifty Days of Easter, and, in a couple of weeks, we will be celebrating Pentecost and Trinity Sunday and moving into that longest season of the liturgical year—the season after Pentecost— when we will again focus less on the events of Jesus’ life and more on Jesus’ teachings—those things he taught his disciples both in words and in actions. We will be reminded over and over of what it means to be a “follower” of Jesus, and have an opportunity to again reflect on how those teachings translate into our own lives 2000 years later. Even though our summer church routine seems a little more relaxed, I hope that you will be diligent in attending worship on Sundays and participating in other activities. We are attempting to re-vitalize some of our committees, like Outreach and Stewardship/Finance, and hoping that by scheduling meetings on Sunday mornings we will have greater participation. In a few days I will be taking a very quick trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to attend part of the annual Synod Assembly of the ELCA (the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)—the equivalent of our Diocesan Convention, but much bigger, since it covers a much larger area and includes many more churches. At this Assembly, Christ Lutheran Chapel, will be officially welcomed into the ELCA! This is a significant milestone toward maintaining and developing an ongoing presence of the ELCA in Hardin County and the surrounding area.
Peace and Blessings, 1

IN PRAISE OF THE CHOIR
CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER
After a very busy year, it is time again for the choir to take its well-deserved hiatus in June and July. Since last August, choir members participated in the Bishop’s Ordination and Installation, Ash Wednesday service with St. James and Evensong on May 1. Great job, choir – you have outdone yourselves this year!
Paul Maguire, son of Frank and Chong Maguire, will graduate Friday, June 3 from John Hardin High School with the Class of 2011. Paul plans to attend Western Kentucky University in the fall.
During June, anyone wishing to vest and sing is welcome to come to the Choir Room at about 9:30. No rehearsal, just assemble and find a robe. During July, choir will not vest.
Victoria Henry received the Central Hardin JROTC “Distinguished Cadet of 2011” award for academic achievement and outstanding dedication to the program. She was promoted to Cadet Major, and will serve as 3rd in command for her senior year.
VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS The Vestry had a productive meeting on May 18. Decisions were made to lay carpet on the center aisle in the church to match the sacristy, take a field trip to inspect “green parking lots” in Louisville and perform a photo inventory of the church’s property. They would like to see more people participating in church committees. Some of the committee meetings will now be held on Sunday morning to make it easier for folks to attend.
Hollie Staskal was recognized at Central Hardin High as having maintained a 92% or better average for the first two trimesters of this school year.
GODLY PLAY WRAP-UP
Due to the Diocesan Convention time being moved back to November, this year the parish needs to begin thinking about who they want as delegates much earlier than usual. The Annual Meeting (Part I) will be moved to accommodate the change, as well as the annual audit and budget deliberations.
A big thank you to Linda Hughes for coordinating the Godly Play program for the younger children during this school year. Thanks to all the volunteers who trained with Linda and told the Bible stories to the children. This wonderful program will resume in the fall. New volunteers are always needed. Please contact Linda if you are interested in helping out!
HELP FOR HELMWOOD HEALTHCARE Sherry Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator for Helmwood Healthcare, has asked while you are doing your spring or summer cleaning, to save those small bottles of toiletries, scarves, jewelry, handkerchiefs, notepads and whatnot that might delight an elderly lady or gentleman as a prize for BINGO. Bring them to church and she will collect them for the Helmwood residents’ prize “treasure chest.” No glass, candles, or large stuffed animals, please.
LECTORS, ACOLYTES, AND MORE Especially during the summer months when folks are away, more volunteers would be welcome to read the lessons, the prayers and serve as acolyte. Training is available – please consider serving. See Alice or contact the church office to volunteer. 3
