Welcome Back! The September chapter meeting is fast approaching. Mark your calendar for September 4. This year the back pages of the newsletter will contain a complete list of all programs and menu selections along with Reservation Guidelines and Reservation Deadlines. There will also be a list of Upcoming Events and News Article Submission Deadlines. The very last page of the newsletter will contain any classified ads placed by members. Going forward, there will be hyperlinks throughout the newsletter that will take you to further information on upcoming events and brochures that are stored on the International, Division or Chapter websites. You may need to be logged in to the website to be able to open it. The rational for this is to attempt to keep the page count down and give everyone the most current accurate information. Don’t forget to get your reservation in.

September 2012 Editor: Christine L. Moore, CAP [email protected] 701.212.8571

September President’s Message How do I start a new year off right? I’ve thought long and hard on this. Being your president is a privilege and responsibility I don’t take lightly. I follow the path of some great Red River leaders.

I also expect your goals for your area by August 30, 2012, your semi-annual report by January 15, 2013 , and your annual report for your areas by June 15, 2013. It is a privilege to be a board member and chair and as part of our team, we should be able to depend on each other. Whether this is asking for help or giving our fellow members the information they need.

In my short time with IAAP many of you have gotten to know me and know I tell it like it is with no intention of hurting anyone but to try and make our chapter better.

We will have surveys about various things this year, including meetings, the chapter, etc. In the past I have seen both positive and negative comments, and I appreciate each one; however, without suggestions on what to improve they are hard to address. I encourage each member to approach me or any board member with their questions and concerns and we will do our best to address each issue. I appreciate each comment, and want you to continue to express them; suggestions on improvement can only make our chapter stronger.

Have you noticed the theme here? If you haven’t, it’s OUR chapter. We’re a team. It’s not mine, nor is it the members who come to the meetings or get involved in the committees or activities. It’s our chapter, the Red River chapter….ALL 25 of us. I can only do so much; those who are involved can only do so much. It’s the responsibility of each of us to make our chapter the best it can be. It’s been said many times “you get out of it what you put in to it.” I can attest to this. I started getting involved my very first meeting (thanks Christine, Sherri, and Darla!) and have increased my involvement each year. I have gained self-confidence, new friendships and networks I can depend on both personally and professionally; and continually gain education and leadership training. It has also inspired me to set goals.

I want our chapter to become bigger, better, stronger and to be more involved. I hope to see more members joining us at the meetings so they can grow professionally and personally. Most of us have careers, family, a life and many other activities we are involved in. However, I do think if you put forth an honest effort to be an involved member of the Red River chapter I know you won’t be wasting your time and will gain so much.

I appreciate those of you who have helped me (and continue to do so) and those who have done their best to make our association one members can learn from, network with and grow professionally and personally. With this said, I have expectations of my board, our committee chairs and members, and the membership as a whole.

I look forward to working with each of you this year. Come with your comments, suggestions and ideas to our meetings, both chapter and you are welcome to come to the board meetings as well. I know you each have so much experience, talent and knowledge to contribute. Sincerely,

I expect my board members and chairs to do the best job they can. I also expect reports at each meeting for your area and if possible to attend the meetings. I fully understand life sometimes gets in the way or that your area may have nothing to report at that time. If you cannot make it to the meeting I expect an emailed report prior to the meeting, even if it’s to say you have nothing to report at this time. I don’t expect to see “nothing to report” every time however. Each board position and chair should have something to say, even it’s to share some advice on their area or to give tidbits of information on upcoming events, etc.

School is in session. Please drive carefully.

If anyone needs help I encourage you to ask someone for help. I am there for you and I know each of you would be willing to help a fellow member.

Community Involvement and Fundraising Come Together IAAP Members Helping Out John Deer Many of you probably remember getting an email in June from an event planning company out of Illinois giving us an opportunity to make some money for the Red River Chapter. Bright and early Darla Bakko, Peggy Cossette, CAP-OM, and Jennifer Gjestvang, CAP-OM arrived at Phoenix International and were put to work. Peggy was busy decorating tables and putting up flags and welcoming the guests as they arrived and checking them in. Jennifer and Darla were put in charge of the photo taking. In the afternoon reinforcements arrived and Aimee Thapa, Sheila Watson and her daughter Anna took over. Aimee was welcoming guests and by the end of the day her and Peggy welcomed about 900 people. Sheila and Anna took over for Darla and Jennifer and together took over 400 photos. It was a long tiring day but at the same time everyone had a good time and we even made some money for our chapter.
