CHRISTMAS IN JULY
July’s items: T-shirts, socks, caps, & flip flops. Please bring your donation to the drop off box at the Mission Wall. We are collecting items all year long! Now is a good time to find items on sale for Christmas boxes.
From the Pastor... Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:1-4 Satan is the father of all lies. He is the one that whispered in the ear of Eve and the one who whispers to me. He makes promises what he cannot deliver. What does he promise? Take the temporal and I will give you the eternal. In the Garden of Eden he told the couple, eat the fruit and you will not die. You will become like God. Romans 1:25 calls this exchanging the truth of God for a lie. It is trading the eternal promises of God for worldly pleasures. In the wilderness Satan tempted Jesus to exchange the eternal for the temporal. If you are the Son of God (eternal) feed your hunger with miraculous bread (temporal). Jesus rebuked the devil quoting from Deuteronomy 8:1-3. Coupling it with the text above gives us instruction for avoiding the lies of the evil one. First, always value the spiritual over the temporal. Filling our hunger with the manna of this world paradoxically leaves us feeling full but truly empty. Once the season of temptation was complete, the angels attended to Jesus’ needs. God is the one who supplies ALL our needs (Phil. 4:19). Second, rely on God and not the world when in the wilderness. He led you there,
so trust Him to lead you out. It is a time of testing and growth. (Psalm 119:11; Proverbs 14:12). Third, Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He did not fall for Satan’s lies but was victorious according to God’s plan and powerful word (Hebrew 1:1-3). It is the same word that sustains us to accomplish God’s plan. When we fail, it is not because we didn’t have the truth. It is because we exchanged the truth of God for a lie. Get into God’s word daily so you will know the truth and may live a spiritually overflowing life (John 10:10).
