EXCERPT FROM CAPTAIN CHRIS CAREY’S SPEECH PBHS 2006 YEAR-END BASEBALL PROGRAM BANQUET LIBERTY GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MAY 31, 2006

“…Now that that’s out of the way, I would like to say a few words to the players. This is going to sound kind of cliché, but it seems like it was just yesterday I was in the small gym pitching in front of Coach Farner my freshman year, shaking and sweating as I tried to make the Varsity team. Then I blinked (those of you that were at the Spring Sports Awards know what I’m talking about), and I was standing in the outfield at Wheaton, crying. During my baseball career at PB I not only learned how to play the game of baseball, but I learned skills essential to life after high school. I learned to work with others and about the hard work it takes to be successful. I learned to treat others with respect and I learned to be a competitor. Unfortunately, my days at PBHS are just about done, but I have a few words for you underclassmen. It took me until about a week ago when I looked back on my high school tenure to realize this, but the days you spend in high school are ones that you will never get to re-live. Stop every once and a while and take everything in so that when you look back 20-30 years from now, you won’t second-guess yourself. Make the most of every day… …This year’s Varsity Baseball team was one full of fun and classy guys. We knew how to have fun but at the same time, learn and be serious every once and a while…We learned how to be passionate. We learned how to bond as a single unit and support one another…This year I got to know each member personally and this is a group of top notch people that has success written over each one of them. We became a family on and off the field. We had our share of arguments, but once we stepped onto the playing field, it was game time and we were a team, not just a bunch of individuals…” Please complete the following sentence starters. Please use additional pages as needed to complete the sentences below: 1. From my teammates and coaches, I learned …

2. I made the most of my days at PBHS by …

3. My PBHS athletic experience taught me …
