November 1, 2017 Dear Parents or Guardians: This letter is meant to inform you of some information that has come to our attention recently about Vape Pens and vaping in general. Fortunately, we have not seen any occurrences at Kumpf School, but we would like to be proactive and keep parents informed. Please take the time to read and discuss this information with your child. Vape Pens, along with all tobacco products, are illegal for students to have possession of or use (NJ State Law and Clark BOE policy). These Vape Pens, however, are not as simple as traditional tobacco products. The smoke does not linger and the odor, if any, does not last long. They are also very easy to hide. Although not as well known, Vape Pens can still have very serious health effects on the body. Nicotine levels are higher than in traditional smoking products. They are also used for other illegal purposes as well. This is one of the many reasons they are banned on school grounds. Studies have shown that students are replacing the liquid tobacco cartridge with other items such as marijuana/cannabis oil and other narcotics. Because of this danger, Vape Pens are considered to be “Drug Paraphernalia” while on school grounds. This implies that if a student is caught with a Vape Pen, for their personal safety and well-being, we will send a student for a mandatory health screening as per district policy. Regardless of the results of the screening, the students will be suspended for possession of a tobacco product and/or paraphernalia and the student must receive counseling from our Student Assistance Counselor, Mr. Steven Kaelblein. Mr. Kaelblein will help the student to make better decisions in the future. On the next page you will find images of some types of Vape Pens. Please note that some of these devices look similar to “flash drives” and can be charged using a USB port.

Our intent with this notification is to provide parents with the latest information on items we feel are dangerous to our students. Once again, while we have not had any occurrences at school, we are sure some of our students have been exposed to these vaping products. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school. We have many resources available to assist you and can also provide outside resources information if necessary.

Sincerely,

Rick Delmonaco Principal
