What is this language that we speak? As quilters, we use terminology that usually makes sense to us, but for those outside our cult or for those that have just joined it, they might not understand what we’re talking about. For instance, let’s talk about size. WOF - Width of Fabric. This var ies by manufactur er . Anywher e fr om 42-45” including selvedge. What’s a selvedge? That’s for a different discussion, but we don’t normally use it in our quilts…so you lose approximately 1”-2” of your WOF when you cut off the selvedge. When I’m figuring usable WOF, I usually count on 40” usable (after laundering – if you wash your fabric before you cut it…also a different discussion). What the heck is a FAT QUARTER? Sometimes called a quilter ’s quarter, this is a quarter yard of fabric that’s wide rather than long. A traditional quarter yard is 9” by WOF. A fat quarter is approximately 18”x22”. Same physical area, different available cutting space. A fat eighth is half that – approx. 9”x22”. What can you cut from a fat quarter? Accor ding to Kathy Br own in her Fat-Quarter Quickies book – with her Creative Grids Fat Quarter Cutter ruler – she gets the following out of a 16”x20” fat quarter:  two 6”x20” strips  six 2 1/2”x20 strips

 ten 1 1/2” strips  twelve 5”x5” squares

 forty-eight 2 1/2” squares  one hundred thirty 1 1/2” squares

Precut packages from fabric manufacturers. Most manufactur er s offer pr ecuts of their fabr ic collections...often arriving before the fabric on the bolt. This allows shops to carry cuts of an entire collection since it’s often difficult to stock upwards of 20 bolts in a single collection. Standard precut sizes include: Squares Strips 2 1/2” Mini-Charm 1 1/2” Honey bun 5” Charm, Bali snaps, nickels 2 1/2” Jelly roll, Bali pops, Pixie strips, strips 10” Layer cake, Bali crackers, dimes 6” Design roll 10” Medallion Tiles When would you want to buy a precut? You just can’t live without it. You’re shopping and you just can’t make a decision, it’s quick to grab a precut. Manufacturers often only provide one printing of precuts so get them when you see them as they probably can’t be reordered. Or, maybe you’re one of those that’s addicted to fat quarters...those little FQ just seem to hop into your hand as you walk by them. It’s O.K.—we totally understand. So what do you do with all those precuts? Ther e ar e a myr iad of patter ns and books gear ed towar d using precuts. You won’t have any trouble finding inspiration. So, if you’ve got a collection of precuts in your stash, find a project and use them up...then you’ll have room for some new stuff.  Reasons to finish your quilt: Winters Outdoor Quilt Festival (Display/sell) Saturday, June 21, 2014 Registration due mid-May Show the rest of the world your talents.
