Neighborhood Restaurants
From the Owners of 3514 30th Street
“Our story begins and ends with the neighborhood nursery school, where our children were attending after we returned from overseas assignment in Manila, Philippines. When we started to look for a home, we drew a circle around the nursery school and started to look at houses within 1/2 mile walking distance from the school. This was in 1998 and the DC housing market was just starting to really heat up and it was disconcerting to see prices going up in real time while we were looking for our future home. Then I found 3514 30th Street NW online – realtor.com was just starting to really take off, and I think that our agent thought I was wasting my time, but I found it before he even knew about it – and we were among the first families to see the listing. We were in the house about 10 minutes when we decided that we had to go back to our temporary apartment to prepare our offer (full price with escalation). We knew that 3514 30th Street NW had everything we needed while the kids were small - walking distance to their nursery school, the library, the community pool, and even grocery shopping. Since that time the Connecticut Avenue corridor has only gotten more vibrant and now offers so many great restaurants and shops. We also knew that we did not want to spend 30 - 60 minutes in traffic – we were both working near Foggy Bottom - and it was important to us to be close to the Metro. We didn’t expect that we would be only 2 blocks from the Cleveland Park Metro and convenient commuter bus lines! Initially we bought the house for 2 years or so, and thought that once the kids were out of nursery school we would likely move to Montgomery County like so many of our friends. Then Washington DC schools got much better, much faster than anyone ever expected and we enjoyed the quality of life of being in leafy Cleveland Park, with the convenience of being only a few miles from downtown. This was also the first time that I got to really ‘dig in’ to a garden of my own, and we enjoyed clearing the underbrush, replacing the soil (!) and over time created a 3-season cutting pollinator garden that attracts butterflies and provides flowers for the table between the months of March and November (9 months of the year). Our kids are grown and leaving the house, however we stayed connected with the neighborhood nursery school. Periodic visits from pre-schoolers who check in on the garden with the passing seasons is another wonderful and unexpected gift from 3514 30 St!”
