The Boat
(Simon Peter’s Testimony)
I owned a little boat a while ago, And sailed the morning sea without a fear, And whither any breeze might fairly blow I steered my little craft afar or near. Mine was the boat And mine the air, And mine the sea, Nor mine a care. My boat became my place of mighty toil, I sailed at evening to the fishing ground, At morn my boat was freighted with the spoil Which my all-conquering work had found. Mine was the boat And mine the net, And mine the skill And power to get. One day there came along that silent shore, While I my net was casting in the sea, A Man who spoke as never man before. I followed Him; new life began in me. Mine was the boat, But His the voice, And His the call, Yet mine the choice.
Ah! ’twas a fearful night out on the lake, And all my skill availed not, at the helm, Till Him asleep I waked, crying, “Take Thou the helm—lest water overwhelm!” And His the boat, And His the sea, And His the peace O’er all and me. Once from the boat He taught the curious throng Then bade me cast my net into the sea; I murmured but obeyed, nor was it long Before the catch amazed and humbled me. His was the boat, And His the skill. And His the catch, And His my will.

The Night the Angel Came
NEW
Sharilyn Martin Have you ever been really afraid of something? Like a scary dream or a big black dog or getting lost in a strange place? Let me tell you about my fear and how God took it all away. My name is Mary now, but I wasn’t always called that. I was born across the ocean in the land of Korea. This is the true story of how God in His love and mercy reached down and touched the heart of a little adopted girl traumatized by grief and separation from her birth mother. The vivid oil paintings on each page capture the real emotions—the tears and the fear, the light and the peace—that make this simply-told story so powerful. The Night the Angel Came is not just for children—grown-ups, too, will treasure this beautiful story.

The Present Elsie Hoover “It looks like cancer,” the doctor said. Elsie didn’t cry just then, but standing by the appointment desk a few minutes later, the impact of his words hit hard. What would the outcome of this be? How would they tell the children? Did she have to leave her family at only thirty-eight? Desperately she reached to God for comfort and grace. So began a thirteen-year journey. Initial treatment was successful and the immediate threat receded. But always a nagging cloud hung over the family—what if the cancer came back? Elsie’s candid story of crushing disappointment, a courageous family, a supporting church, and a loving God.

If you’re involved in such work, you may be interested in knowing what other groups have developed and have available. A newly developed spreadsheet has reviews of outreach CDs, prices, and contact information. Though not a CLP project, it is noted here in the interest of outreach work. Danny the Workhorse Helga Moser Danny was big and strong and gentle, but he had a problem. Danny hated to work. When Farmer Don called the horses in for oats in the morning, Danny would stand in the far corner of the pasture and refuse to come in. When Farmer Don put Danny’s work harness across Danny’s plump back, Danny would heave a big sigh and hang his head, pretending to be terribly sick. Farmer Don and Missus Dora were worried. How would Farmer Don get all the plowing and planting, hauling and harvesting done if Danny refused to help? Then some oatmeal cookies gave Missus Dora an idea. Danny learned a valuable lesson, and so can we. Fine watercolor paintings illustrate this fun story.

Aaron’s Civil War Romaine Stauffer
Lured by the promise of adventure, travel, and a large bonus, Aaron Stauffer turned his back on his training and his mother’s tears and enlisted to fight in the Civil War. His heart swelled with pride and patriotism as he shouldered his newly acquired musket and marched behind the banner of his company. He felt powerful enough to win the war single-handedly and return in a matter of weeks as a hero. But things did not go the way he had dreamed. Army life was not what he had been led to believe. Euphoria turned to misery and fear and questions as the horrible realities of war brought him face to face with the enemy—and death. As Aaron looks for answers to the questions he can no longer avoid, he discovers the Civil War has become, for him, an intensely personal battle. 264650
