Tony Hobson - Head Coach

Tony Hobson is in his third season as head coach of the Fort Hays State women’s basketball program. He became the sixth coach in the history of the women’s basketball program in the summer of 2008. In his first two seasons, Hobson led Fort Hays State to appearances in the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Hobson has the highest winning percentage in NCAA Division II for coaches with at least five years at four-year colleges, but less than five years at the Division II level with a record of 238-69 (.775) in nine years. He has an overall collegiate coaching record of 440-135 (.765) in 18 years. Hobson came to Fort Hays State from Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., where he was head coach of the Lady Broncos for seven years. Hobson won back-to-back NAIA National Championships in his first two seasons (2001-02 & 2002-03) as head coach at Hastings College, and led the school to another National Championship in the 2005-06 season. He was named NAIA Coach of the Year three times, all coming during the national championship seasons. The NAIA National Championship in 2001-02 was the first basketball championship at any college level, men or women, in the state of Nebraska. Hobson was an associate head coach at Hastings in 2000-01, being hired a year early to take over the program the following year. Hobson’s teams reached the 30-win plateau in five of his seven years as head coach at Hastings College. The 34 wins recorded by the 2001-02 team are the most wins ever for a women’s basketball team in the state of Nebraska. His teams qualified for the NAIA National Tournament all seven years and reached the Final Four in five of the seven years. He led Hastings College to Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and conference tournament championships in 2002, 2003 and 2007. In his time at Hastings College, Hobson accumulated a record of 211-40. Prior to his stint at Hastings College, Hobson was head women’s basketball coach at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan., from 1997-2000. At BCCC, he accumulated a record of 7822 in three seasons, guiding the Cougars to a KJCCC West Division Championship and Region VI Final Four appearance in 1998-99, and a Region VI Championship and fifth place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in 1999-2000. The 1999-2000 team set a school record for wins in a season (34). Hobson began his collegiate coaching career as the head coach of the Cloud County Community College women’s basketball program from 1983-1989, where he compiled a record of 124-44 in six seasons. He guided the Thunderbirds to the Region VI finals in 1984-85 and 1985-86. As a player, Hobson was a two-time all-conference and all-district 11 performer for Hastings College in 1980 and 1981. He played two seasons at Barton County Community College prior to the two years at Hastings College, garnering all-conference and all-region honors in 1979. Hobson earned an associate’s degree from Barton County Community College in 1979 and a bachelor’s degree from Hastings College in Business Administration in 1981. He earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from the United States Sports Academy in Mobile, Ala., in 1989. Hobson is a native of Hardy, Neb. He and his wife, Becky, have two children, Samantha and Cash.

ASSISTANT COACHES FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY
Carrie Hofstetter - Assistant Coach Carrie Hofstetter is in her third season as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Fort Hays State University. Hofstetter came to the program from Hastings College where she served as the assistant under Tony Hobson for four years. She helped coach the Broncos to a national title during the 2005-06 season. Hofstetter had an impressive career as a player under Hobson at Hastings College. She was a member of two national championship teams and helped the program to a record of 121-22 in her four years at the school. She was a first team all-conference selection in 2003 and 2004, and an NAIA National All-Tournament Team selection three years from 2002-2004. She was the Great Plains Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a NAIA First Team All-American in 2004 as a senior. Also during her senior year, Hofstetter was named the FCA Central Nebraska Athlete of the Year, a member of the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska Team, and received the NAIA Champions of Character Award. She still owns school records for career assists and steals. Hofstetter is a native of Edgar, Neb., and graduated in 2004 with bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Health Promotion Management from Hastings College. She played her prep career at Sandy Creek High School helping her school to four state titles in girls basketball while never losing a single game.

Jacie Hoyt - Graduate Assistant

Jacie Hoyt is in her first year as a graduate assistant with the Fort Hays State women’s basketball program. Hoyt transfered to Fort Hays State from Wichita State University prior to the 200910 season. Her basketball career was cut short by knee injuries, never allowing her to play at FHSU. Hoyt was a standout performer at Wichita State University, starting all games as a sophomore and freshman at point guard. Hoyt had one of the most illustrious careers in the history of high school athletics in Kansas. A native of Hoxie, Kan., she was a three-time all-state selection in basketball and volleyball at Hoxie High School. As a basketball player, she averaged more than 25 points per game during her high school career, scoring over 2,000 points in just three years after missing her freshman year with an injury. She set a Kansas Class 2A State Tournament record for career scoring average at 26.3 points per game. She finished sixth on the career scoring average list for all classes. Hoyt is working towards her master’s degree at Fort Hays State University.
