coastal flats Project Location: Gaithersburg, MD Project Category: Interior Architecture Project Synopsis: Coastal Flats in Gaithersburg, MD is the third outpost of its kind, under the esteemed flag of Great American Restaurants. This location quickly became the centerpiece of the new community at Crown Farm. In addition to being a design gem, it offers a relaxing, colorful, and whimsical escape to every lucky customer. Restaurants should take you to a new place – an atmosphere different than your usual – and Coastal Flats brings us to an amalgam of a Key West port town and a lively seaside scene. The restaurant is entirely framed from true glu-lam timbers overhead, evoking the dockside pavilion structures that span fish markets and port cafes. At every turn, brilliant colors work seamlessly to carry your attention deeper into the restaurant – from the custom terrazzo floor, to the purple ductwork, to the sparkling light fixtures. The low walls are capped in 2” thick, quarried coral stone and specialty cast glass panels are edge lit to highlight their artisan-crafted underwater texture. Custom commissioned art is everywhere – giving local artists a venue is a core client mission – from the “aged” ghost mural on the exterior wall, to the auto-body metal tropical fish sculptures hanging above the lobby, to the custom 80 foot long hand painted mural depicting the million layers of seaside life. The exterior design follows suit: a 12’ deep structural canopy creates an enormous outdoor room facing the bustling community intersection. And the faux clerestory windows feature humorous old advertising slogans to give passersby a double take.
