Coat of Arms Project
Due Date: Friday, 5/4/18
A coat of arms is a design belonging to a particular person (or group of people)and used by him or her in a wide variety of ways. Coats of arms originated during the Middle Ages when knights used colors to make their armor and shield easily recognizable by friends, foes, and spectators in battle and tournament, almost like a uniform. The designs were worn over the armor, hence the term coat of arms. In addition to being painted on the shield, elements of the knight’s coat of arms were used to decorate the helmet crest, the pavilion, and the banners of knights and lords. In the beginning, each knight chose his own symbols and designs. He might choose an animal to represent strength if he was strong, refer to an accomplishment, or make a connection with his name. As time went on, the son would keep his father’s design and add his own elements to it. In this activity, you will create a Coat of Arms for yourself. Like the knights, you’ll want to make it tell something about who you are or what you like. It should be based on your hobbies, personality, character and family. Materials Needed: Cardboard or poster board no smaller than 12”x12” or larger than 18”x18” Scissors, glue, crayons, markers, colored pencils Computer printouts are acceptable for this project Follow these steps to complete your project: Step 1: The most common shape for a shield was called a heater. Women, however, usually carried a lozenge, which is shaped like a diamond, because they did not go into battle. Start by selecting a shape and cutting the cardboard into that shape.
Step 2: The surface of the shield must have lines of partition that border or divide your shield into four (4) different sections. Choose a line of partition and/or border from the attached samples. Step 3: The shield must also include the following… a) A symbol/picture to represent your birth order in your family b) A symbol/picture to represent a hobby, activity, or sport c) A drawing /picture of an animal that represents your character d) Any other symbol/picture that represents you e) A personal motto (words or phrase that you stand by) written in the banner at the bottom of the shield
The colors and patterns you use on your shield are also symbolic of something, so be sure to pick things that represent you. Please refer to the attached lists &/or these websites:
