COED INTRAMURAL SOCCER RULES Players and Substitutions Teams will have no less than 9 and no more than 12 members on the roster.

There can be no more than 7 field players and a clearly designated goal keeper A minimum of five players is required to start or continue play. There must be a minimum of 2 Men and 2 Women on the field at all times Failure to meet this minimum will means that team must play without filling that position on the field
Substitutes wait at midfield on the sideline and are only permitted to enter play when recognized by the referee. Substitutions are only allowed in the following situations:

The referee or supervisor on duty will conduct a coin toss with the visiting team choosing heads or tails. a. The team winning the toss will have the choice of side or kickoff. b. The other team will take the other choice. c. The second half will begin with kickoff by the team that did not have it in the first half, facing the opposite direction from the first half. Two 18-minute halves will be played with a 2-minute halftime period. Game time is running time with the clock being stopped only: a. When a goal is scored b. When a penalty kick is awarded c. Touch the ball a second time before another player from either team touches it A goal is scored when the entire ball passes legally beyond the goal line, into the goal, provided that it has not been carried, thrown, or propelled by the scorer’s arm or hand. a. Send a throw or goal kick beyond midfield in the air. b. Punt the ball Ties will not be broken in regular season play. In playoffs, ties will be broken by one 5-minute Golden Goal overtime period (first team to score a goal wins). If score remains after this period, penalty kicks will serve to decide the outcome of the game. Penalty kicks will begin 4 vs. 4 format, and continue as necessary after 1 vs. 1 format.

Yellow and Red Cards will be issued in accordance to referee judgments. a. Two Yellow Cards in the same contest will result in automatic Red Card. Direct and indirect kicks will be awarded in accordance with referee judgments. The kicker will have at least 7 yards, per the referee’s discretion and judgement, to play the ball once free of defense. A free kick may be taken by any player of the offended team. a. Violations resulting in a direct kick that occur in the defending goal box will result in a penalty kick. Violations which reward a direct free kick include: a. Handling the ball with hands or arms b. Holding or pushing opponent, including jersey grabbing and deliberate arm extension c. Striking, kicking, or tripping an opponent without contacting the ball first d. Slide tackling e. Deliberately charging an opponent/goalkeeper f. The goalkeeper intentionally striking an opponent with the ball All other violations will reward an indirect free kick, including but not limited to: a. Unsportsmanlike conduct in any manner b. Dangerous play per the discretion of the referee c. Improper substitution d. A yellow card will be issued when a player: a. Is guilty of unsportsmanlike behavior b. Shows dissent by word or action, directed at teammates, opponents, spectators, referees, or anyone else c. Persistently receives violations for minor fouls d. Deliberately delays the restart of play e. Fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick or free kick f. Enters or re-enters the field of play without the referee's permission g. Deliberately leaves the field of play without the referee's permission. h. Commits a last defender foul that prevents a goal scoring opportunity i. Slide tackling A red card will be issued when a player: a. Uses foul, abusive, and/or aggressive language and/or gestures, including but not limited to insults and curse words b. Commits any act considered to be serious foul, violent and/or malicious conduct c. Denies a goal scoring opportunity by intentionally handling the ball illegally, excluding the goal keeper in his/her own penalty area i. A goal scoring opportunity is per the discretion of the referee, except in the case of a defending hand ball in the defending penalty box d. Commits a deliberate foul to prevent a goal scoring opportunity e. Receiving a second yellow card in one match A red card results in ejection from the contest, for which the consequences are detailed in the Intramural Activities Handbook. In addition to the consequences detailed in the Intramural Activities Handbook, displaying a pattern of conduct that results in card issuance regularly, either yellow or red, will result in additional discipline per the discretion of the Coordinator of Intramural Activities
