coles supermarkets overview
solution
Coles supermarkets is the second largest supermarket chain in Australia. Part of the Wesfarmers Group they operate nearly 800 supermarkets across Australia in addition to 650 Coles Express petrol stations, 320 Bunning’s hardware stores , 150 Officeworks stores and an assortment of liquor retailers.
As part of Coles strategy to improve the customer journey they engaged Frogparking to provide a range of parking guidance solutions. While they do not charge the customer for parking they wanted to provide a cost effective, cutting edge solution that would highlight the number of car parks available in a given area, minimising the amount of time the customer spends looking for a park. In addition to this they were looking to get live data on car park occupancy, in real time at a head office level, thereby providing invaluable data on peak shopping times, average time spent in store and the number of times per day that a carpark is utilised.
Coles supermarkets are located both within shopping centre’s and as standalone stores, often with a handful of complimentary stores within the same shopping precinct. These locations are open for extended hours and have a large volume of vehicles visiting at all hours. The retail giant is always looking for ways to improve the customers overall experience and ensure they are seen as innovators within the highly competitive Australian supermarket duopoly.
outcome As a result of the success at the initial pilot sites Coles are now deploying Frogparking’s parking guidance solution at both new stores and rebuilds of existing, flagship locations. The data collected is allowing them to look at each store and expand/improve as necessary based on the data captured by the Frogparking system. The effectiveness of the signage is proving very popular with the Coles customer base. Customer survey’s, with questions specifically relating to the car park have been overwhelmingly positive with the retailer confirming that these car parks received a higher rating than any new store previously recorded.

Frogparking have worked with Coles to develop a solution that includes both indoor and outdoor parking guidance and gives the shopper live statistics on the best place to park. The system includes surface mount sensors that communicate occupancy data directly to the cloud based management system, via wireless gateways. All occupancy information is then immediately relayed to both end of isle variable message signs and exterior message signs that provide details on the total number of spaces available within the complex. In the case of the indoor solution the sensors also communicate to the overhead guidance lights, alerting customers to available spaces. In addition to this it has allowed the retailer to look at the number of vehicles entering their car parks and as a result of this information they have expanded car parks, where necessary, further improving the overall customer experience. While Coles do not issue infringements to shoppers the smarts behind the Frogparking system have allowed them to set up alerts which highlight vehicles exceeding the maximum, allowed time. As a result of this they were able to identify staff who were parking in the premium shopper areas- this allowed the retailer to address the issue with staff and put a policy in place regarding staff parking.

Irvine Company is a privately held real-estate investment company with operations throughout coastal California. Irvine Company focusses on creating balanced, sustainable communities that provide their residents, customers and guests with the best possible live, work, shop and play experiences.
Frogparking’s USA agent, Sentry Control Systems deployed the Frogparking sensor and way finding solution at the Irvine Spectrum Center in California in July 2014. This deployment consists of a simple solution of 2,400 outdoor solar powered parking sensors and dynamic signage to indicate live parking availability to users via variable message signs at key decision points throughout the car park, encouraging users to move through the parking facility freely.
The Irvine Spectrum Center, owned by The Irvine Company, was opened in November 1995 and is Orange Country’s premier dining, shopping and entertainment destination with a diverse collection of over 130 stores, restaurants and entertainment venues. During the average week every day over 10,000 vehicles visit the shopping center with customers and employees parking using the indoor parking garages and outdoor surface lots on site. This doubles during peak periods such as the lead-up to Christmas with over 20,000 vehicles visiting the shopping center daily. A priority for the Irvine Spectrum Center is to get vehicles into parking spaces as quickly as possible, to both reduce congestion and minimize customer frustration – allowing them to spend less time circling the parking lots and more time shopping!
As a result of the system, Irvine Company management continue to enjoy the benefit of being able to analyze occupancy and utilization data from Frogparking’s cloud-based parking management system, delivering a true understanding of car park activity to use for making informed decisions.
outcome The solution will be extended to real-time targeted enforcement, allowing the Security Officers to be directed to vehicles that are infringing the maximum allowable stay and issue them with a citation, and Frogparking’s mobile app (branded Irvine Company) for parking way finding, advertising, promotions and loyalty vouchers. Irvine Company is continuing to roll out additional Frogparking sites and features – including the addition of Frogparking’s indoor guidance solution across multiple sites, and an Irvine branded mobile app for parking guidance, find my car, and retailer advertising. The Frogparking solution has now become a core part of Irvine Company’s construction going forward.
