Colombia Traverse o f the Sierra Nevada de Santa M arta; Pico Sim m ons. Tom Simpson and I entered the range from above Ciénaga M agdalena (San Pedro de la S ierra), w ent into the paramo by Cuchilla Cim arona, and continued along the w estern spine of the Viscungue valley and up this valley to the base of Pico Simmons, which we climbed. The two of us kept on around the “H orqueta” by a southern route, down past N oboba (lak e ), down the D onachui and on over to A tanquez. This I believe is the first com plete traverse of the Sierra. We were there from D ecem ber 29 to January 12, 1976. P h i l i p de G r u y t e r
