Colossians - The Big Picture Colossians • Dennis Miller, Lead Pastor • September 15 & 16, 2012

1. As pastor, I shared my fears and excitement about studying the Book of Colossians for the next seven months. (Twenty one sermons covering 95 verses.) So what are YOUR fears and/or excitement as we prepare to study? Which of my thoughts do you most connect with? 2. What did you learn (or were you reminded of) about the life and ministry of the Apostle Paul? What is your thought about being used by God even in difficult circumstances? 3. What did you learn about Colosse and how will it help you in studying the Book of Colossians? 4.We will talk more about Epaphras in coming weeks but what are your initial thoughts as you review those few verses about him? 5. How do you think the theme of the book will help you? 6.I shared my personal hopes for the study. What are yours?

My Fears about this Series: 1. It is ________________. 2. It is ______ ________________! (Exodus, John, David, Acts, etc.) 3. It focuses on _____________ and many Christian people can’t __________ that because they are accustomed to ______________. My Excitement about this Series: 1. It is ________________. 2. It celebrates ________________. The Period It is around ___ AD and Paul has had an _____________ 25 years or so. 1. Paul had ________________ to Christianity and, after some training, served as a ________________. 2. Paul traveled on _____________ missionary journeys which included sermons and great _____________, but also beatings and ___________. 3. Paul was now ___________ in a ___________ cell in Rome as he writes this __________ and three others (Philippians, Ephesians, Philemon). 4. Paul didn’t think that God was _______ with him ______. He was not _________. This is a powerful lesson for all of us! Consider:

The Place Colosse was a “________________ important” city. It was once designed to be a “________________.” Colosse was located in the ________ Valley, 100 miles from ______________ (where Paul lived for 3 years). But Paul had never _____________ the church of Colosse. ____________ cities were located in this area and it was a very “________________” place. Col. 4:13 I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.

The “Isms” of this area: ___________ism-- the focus is on ______ and his __________. ___________ism -- the focus is on ______________. Jewish ___________ism -- the focus is on what you ____. ___________ism -- the focus is on what you _______ do. ___________ism --the focus is on what you ____________ or _______________. The Partner It was probably during the three years that Paul was preaching in Ephesus that ______________ heard him speak and came to faith in Christ. Epaphras became the _______________ of the church at Colosse and visited Paul in prison to _______________ this letter. Col. 1:7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, Col. 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

The Purpose The _______________ and complete _______________ of Christ. (The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. -- Covey)

Another way to say it: Jesus plus _____________ = _______________! Some will tell you that you _______________ _______________ than just _______________: Examples: Profile I. The _______________ section -- 1:1-14 II. The _______________ section -- 1:15 to 2:23 III. The _______________ section -- 3:1 to 4:6 IV. The _______________ section -- 4:7-18 Primary Words __________ -- used 29 times _______________ -- (referring to Christ) -- _______________ times _______________, Knowledge, Understanding -- 11 times Pivotal Verses Col. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. Col. 2:9   For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, Col. 3:1   Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

Personal Hopes 1. That this letter of Paul would become a _______________ of us and that it would help to _______________ our faith and doctrine. 2. That you would _______________ read a few verses from the letter and keep it ____________ in your mind. (Daily email is available.) 3. That you would _______________ a portion of the letter with me. 4. That ___________ area of your Christian walk would be _______________ transformed because of this study.
