SPONSORED BY: Rethinking Church Cooperatively Rethinking Church Cooperatively is a joint effort of the Rural Chaplains Association, Appalachian Ministries Network, United Methodist Rural Advocates and Rural/Urban Network (RUN) of the General Board of Global Ministries. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Lay (including youth and young adults), clergy, persons involved in and exploring cooperative styles of ministry, persons working in rural and urban churches of all sizes, racial ethnic constituencies, judicatory leaders and other key leaders. Description of the Intended Program: The gathering will focus on transforming churches, communities and individuals through multiple styles of ministry; exploring new models and equipping leaders to move forward in collaborative efforts in both rural and urban communities; and identifying ways to work together with ecumenical, interfaith and community partners. The event will bring together dynamic, innovative presenters from a wide variety of settings to share vital ministries that are transforming communities across the country. Emphasis will be given to adaptive leadership, empowering persons living in poverty, developing ministries in new places for new people, and revitalizing existing congregations. Committed plenary leaders include: Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, The Rev. Dr. Susanna Metz (Episcopalian) presently serving as Vicar in England , The Rev. Candace Lewis, Executive Director of Path 1 New Church Starts GBOD, and GBGM Deputy General Secretary, Mr. George Howard. A diversity of Skill Shops will be offered including: Multicultural Ministries and Racial Ethnic Perspectives, Interconnections among Faith Communities (Interfaith and Ecumenical, Cooperation Outside the Box (Mission-based Models), The Circles Campaign: Ministry with Persons in Poverty, Community Health Care ,New Places for New People, Geographically Based Cooperatives, Resourcing to Develop and Sustain Cooperatives, Technology: Cooperating in the 21st Century, Biblical and Theological Foundations for Cooperation, Shalom Zone Ministries, Environmental and Economic Justice and Equipping Cooperative Directors/District Superintendents/Conference Directors. Benefits/Impact/Outcome In the Gathering there will be great learning and sharing opportunities to offer insights into the formation and implementation of mission and ministry. Cooperative ministry endeavors will be strengthened as churches work together across denominations in ecumenical and interfaith relationships. Expected benefits and outcomes are based on the realization that cooperative styles of ministry provide the key to open new doors to effective ministry in the 21st Century. For more than a quarter of a century, the cooperative ministry movement has had growing acceptance; expanded participation; and an enriched theological, ecclesiastical and sociological rationale. The movement is indeed a contributor to shaping communities of hope in discipleship witnessing and in spreading the Gospel for the transformation of the world.

Cooperative styles of ministry strengthen, enable and empower congregations of all sizes and settings in extending the reach and enhancing the impact of their mission and ministry for making disciples of Jesus Christ, alleviating human suffering and in seeking justice, freedom and peace. The united efforts of partner congregations have a dynamic multiplying impact as they engage justice issues and respond to human needsphysical, social, spiritual etc.. The Gathering will bring practitioners to share models and to identify emerging new challenges and opportunities; theologians and church leaders to clarify and inform from Biblical traditions and practice; and contemporary, experienced resource people to challenge and inspire. 1.5 CEU’s Total cost per person (registration, room and meals): Prior to June 30th:

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR CONFERENCE TEAMS OF THREE OR MORE: A lay scholarship is available to a conference team of three or more persons working to explore the development of a new cooperative style of ministry. The team is to be composed of a clergy, a lay person (youth/adult), and a judicatory leader. The $385. scholarship includes room (double occupancy), meals and registration fee. A limited number of scholarships are available on a first come, first serve basis.
