Common Core ENGLISH Regents Breakdown:
Overview: • 3 hour exam • 3 sections • MCQ = 24 points (may vary) • Writing = 10 points • Conversion chart is used to configure the overall, final grade
Exam: 1- Part 1: Multiple Choice: MCQ a. 24 multiple choice questions (it has varied on sample and actual examples) b. Read 3 Passages: The passages will be: prose, poetry and non-fiction. c. The passages & questions are more difficult and dense when compared the Regents. d. You want to earn as many correct as possible (shoot for 14 or higher) 2- Part 2: Writing From Sources: Argumentative Essay: Writing a. One essay (See below) b. Scored a 6-0 rating c. You will read 4 texts and form an argumentative essay using 3 texts. You must have 2 claims and a counter-claim (which must be refuted in the same paragraph). Also, each claim/counter-claim MUST contain TEXTUAL EVIDENCE (QUOTES)! The more quotes you use, the better your essay! d. You should earn a 4 or higher on this section. NOTE: It is imperative you earn a 4 or higher for the essay! 3- Part 3: Text Analysis: Short Response: Writing a. One short response b. Scored a 4-0 rating c. You will read ONE passage (fiction or non-fiction). You will then write a 2-3 paragraph short response by identifying and explaining (analyzing) the author’s central idea and ONE literary device, element or technique that s/he used to DEVELOP the central idea. You MUST USE TEXTUAL EVIDENCE/QUOTES! d. Two teachers read this – there is half credit. The grade is rounded up to the nearest whole number: example: 2.5 = 3. e. You should earn a 3 or higher in this section. NOTE: It is imperative you earn a 3 or higher for the short answer! Scoring: - The scoring for the exam is weighted as follows: - Part 1: MCQ – 1 question X 1 weight = 1 point (24 questions = 24 points) - Part 2: Argument Essay = 6 points X 4 weight = 24 points - Part 3: Short Answer = 4 points X 2 weight = 8 points - Total MCQ points = 24 - Total Writing points = 32 - Total points combined = 56 (they use a conversion chart...--->scroll to the next page) ** If you do better on this exam, the grade will appear on your transcript in place of the ELA Exam. This exam has more weight and prestige than the ELA Regents! **
